Rupert & Rothschild "Baron Edmond" Western Cape Red Blend 2015

Our Score
(6/2020) For the last few hundred years Bordeaux has been the undisputed heavyweight champ of wine. Well, someone may want to have a conversation with Bordeaux because when we tried this right bank style redfrom Stellenbosch, we were convinced we'd found the next contender. A traditional blend of 61% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 7% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot gives the Baron Edmond a structured frame. Aromas of blackberry and dark plum seamlessly intertwined with dark chocolate and spices introduce you to the wine. Polished, silky tannins then unfold on the palate with flavors of cranberry and mint. This is a full bodied, lush and elegant red with the tannic structure and acidity to age well beyond 15 years.

Vinous, Neal Martin
(11/2019) "The 2016 GPS Klein River Syrah is a new addition to the Kershaw range. It has a very perfumed bouquet of raspberry, crushed strawberry, fennel and sage; discreet touches of camphor emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, beautiful balance and a hint of spice toward the harmonious, persistent finish. Superb. Drinking Window: 2020 - 2035."

(10/2019) "The 2016 Clonal Selection Elgin Syrah is a blend of around eight parcels, all individually microvinified and matured with varying levels of new oak, from zero up to 70%. Limpid in the glass, it has a glorious, pure bouquet of red currant, raspberry and mulberry scents that are seductive and very Burgundian - think Vosne-Romanee! The palate is rounded on the entry, offering lively red berry fruit laced with white pepper, fennel and a subtle charcoal note. There is a slight grittiness toward the finish, which is well structured and persistent. This is both a delicious and an intellectual Syrah. Drinking window: 2020 - 2038."

Stony Brook Vineyards "The Lyle" Coastal Region Sparkling Chardonnay 2013
91+
Our Score
(9/2020) These bubbles are going to knock you out! Stony Brook uses the classic Champagne method to produce a 100% Chardonnay sparkler that achieves remarkable balance with refreshing minerality, citrus notes and Honeycrisp apple. Over 4 years of lees contact gives the palate a toasty, brioche creaminess on the finish. Perfect for any celebration or holiday, it pairs well with appetizers, shellfish and fried chicken. The price per quality ratio here is a no-brainer. Put this vintage sparkling up against entry-level non-vintage Champagnes that cost $15-20 more, and it will impress!

BLANKbottle "Little William" Western Cape Syrah 2019
91+
Our Score
(12/2020) This is a vividly faithful expression of Syrah from South Africa's beautiful Western Cape. With wonderful earth, cracked pepper and blackberry on the nose, this wine nearly transports you to the Witzenberg Mountain Vineyard 750 meters above sea level. Medium bodied on the palate, with a touch of smokiness, this is a fantastic wine that also brings us visions of the Rhone Valley. The "Little William" is reference to a serendipitous tale from winemaker Pieter Walser about encountering a lost boy named William in the middle of the road coming down from the vineyard and then once again four years later. Of course this wine offers an incredible story, because at BLANKbottle, that's what they do.

BLANKbottle "Saint Rand" Darling Pinotage 2018
91
Our Score
Cheekily named after the winemaker's hometown of Strand, South Africa. This 100% Pinotage pays homage to and older style of winemaking, and we find Pieter Walser's imagining here of a sometimes controversial grape as the most complex in recent memory. Raised a full two years in oak has provided some serious depth and weight to this "uncorrupted" wine. Blackberry preserves, dark plum, raspberry, and a hint of florals greet you on the nose. The fruit translates beautifully to the palate, accompanied by rugged earth and cracked pepper. The tannins aren't intrusive, but they are present, lending nice structure Another impressive find from BLANKbottle try with short ribs, burgers - or if you're feeling "stir-crazy", mushroom risotto!

BLANKbottle "Master of None" Western Cape Red Blend 2019
91
Our Score
(12/2020) This is a great example of the work that winemakers do in the winery. Composed of an absolute smorgasbord of grape varieties (Grenache, Cinsault, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chenin Blanc) some might dismiss this blend on paper. However, when a winemaker has a particular vision, it can really shine through in the glass. At BLANKbottle they value the natural expression of the fruit their unique terroir gives them. In "Master of None" you get lively aromas of cherry, raspberry, cranberry and wildflowers. While the nose is inviting, light-hearted and fun, on the palate this wine REALLY delivers the goods. There's a bouncy liveliness here often found in great Beaujolais. Light-bodied with great acidity, this wine is perfect for a myriad of different foods; roasted chicken, barbecue and seafood jump to the front of our minds!

Rall Wines "Rall White" Stellenbosch Blend 2018
93
Vinous, Neal Martin
(10/2019) "The 2018 Rall White is matured in 225- and 500-liter used oak barrels. This has a very composed bouquet of pressed white flowers, hints of linseed and a touch of jasmine unfurling nicely with each swirl of the glass. The palate is very well balanced, offering clementine, pear and light peach skin notes that fan out on the waxy-textured finish. The persistence is very fine, and yellow plum and lemongrass notes linger in the mouth after the wine has departed. Superb."

BLANKbottle "Pseudonym" Western Cape Cinsault 2019
91
Our Score
(10/2020) Blankbottle winemaker Pieter Walser is a maverick, his winemaking approach is: you give him fantastic grapes, he'll give you fantastic wine. They don't necessarily need to be from a fabled 200-year-old historic vineyard, planted on southwest facing volcanic slopes, for him to make fantastic wine. He has turned into something of an expert grape-hunter. This ideology brings us to the story of "Pseudonym". Pieter was at the property of a farmer from whom he buys grapes, and noticed a small vineyard in a little valley that he had never seen picked. When Pieter asked why the farmer never sold from that vineyard, he learned the birds in that valley pick the vines clean every year, so come harvest time - there aren't enough grapes. When Pieter found out the vines were 60+ years old, it piqued his interest. He made the farmer a deal, Pieter would buy bird nets to protect the fruit if he sold only to Pieter at harvest. It ended up being a great gamble because Pseudonym is one of our favorite Blankbottle's wines to date. The nose is super-fresh, bursting with lively red fruit. A light and bright, but rambunctious, palate features bouncy acidity, great fruit, a smidge of black tea, and pretty floral aspects. This vibrant, juicy 100% Cinsault is everything you want in an easy-drinking wine and would go great with grilled chicken tacos. Drink now!
