Mount Abora "Saffraan" Swartland Cinsault 2016

90+ Our Score
(9/2018) South African Cinsault quality is at a high point now and this bottling rocks! "Saffraan" is from 38-year-old bush vines on deep shale and schist soils in the Swartland. It's dry farmed, whole-cluster is used, then spends nine months in used 300-liter French oak barrels. The palate is zesty and energetic, fresh strawberry, cranberry, and black peppers mingle together with great acidic structure. There is a slightly dusty, red earth component that blends well with the subtle smokiness, like an old bushfire. Massively drinkable, be sure to chill slightly.

Field Recordings "Hock" Central Coast White Blend 2017

90 Our Score
(3/2018) "Hock" is the newest edition to the every expanding Field Recordings line. This is Andrew's homage to traditional Alsatian Edelzwicker field blends. It is a zesty and snappy blend of 50% Gewurztraminer, 35% Pinot Gris and 15% Riesling. This is the type of wine that is meant to be drunk anytime with really any food. It has just the barest kiss of sweetness to round out the bright acid, with just enough fruit and floral tones to be thirst quenching & refreshing. This one screams to be drunk outside on a warm day. Be sure to keep a couple in your fridge all summer long.

Bodegas Aster Ribera del Duero Crianza 2012

91 Our Score
(12/2017) La Rioja Alta is one of the great producers in Rioja. Bodegas Aster is their estate in Ribera del Duero. While it is a Crianza, matured for one year in barrel, the focus here is on the pure black cherry of the Tempranillo grape. All about the fruit, the 2015 Aster is clean and bright, medium-to-full in body and softly textured with an ever so slight earth and mild vanilla character. A beautiful dry red to pair with red meat and stews. Think pot roast.

Domaine Guillaume Gonnet "Le Brave" Cairanne Rouge 2016

91-92 Our Score
(1/2019) This one surprised us. We first tasted it while sitting around the dinner table with Guillaume and Kelly Gonnet at their Domaine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It was the concentration and complexity of flavor, the refined elegance and the sheer power, all working together, that caught us off guard. Cairanne, a Southern Rhone region, received its own appellation designation in 2016, and if other bottlings perform the way this one does, you can bet prices will go up quickly. Blending 80% Grenache with 20% Syrah, all hand harvested, from 45-year-old vines grown in sand, limestone and clay, Guillaume ferments this juice with only wild yeasts. The wine gives deep red berry fruits that are both youthfully fresh and fleshy ripe, a distinction that suggests both old new school flavors. Long, with chalk-sandy earth notes, flavors of smoked herbs, cocoa and black olive, and a medium-plus tannic structure, all help lend complexity. A very interesting wine with more layers and more age-worthy than the initial tastes suggest. A very fine effort, and representative of the greatness of 2016.

Andrew Murray "Tous les Jours" Santa Ynez Valley Syrah 2016

90 Our Score
90 Wine Advocate
(9/29/2017) "The 2016 Syrah Tous les Jours sports a medium to deep garnet-purple color and leaps from the glass with vibrant raspberry coulis, black cherry and red currant notes with touches of baking spices and roses. The medium to full-bodied palate fills the mouth with spices and red and black fruits, framed by plush, rounded tannins and finishing on a peppery note. This is so different from the previous vintage of this wine and nicely done too! Drink Date: 2017 - 2021."

Mer Soleil "Silver" Monterey County Unoaked Chardonnay 2015

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $18.99!
90 Our Score
(11/2017) The mouth filling, unoaked Chardonnay in the unusual cement-looking bottle is back with what might be its best vintage to date! Though the wine sees no oak, it is velvety rich with a balancing brightness. The flavors of candied apple and Creamsicle cover the palate so intensely that you won't even need to eat the food - just drink the wine! A solid effort from the Wagner family of Caymus fame.

Gen del Alma "JiJiJi" Tupungato Chenin Blanc 2017

Searingly high acid will make you pucker up, but leave you wanting another sip!
90 Our Score
88 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
(7/2018) "Lemon-straw color with an unfiltered appearance. Aromas of pineapple, orange zest, ginger and crushed stone, plus a positive suggestion of oxidation that quickly dissipated. Bone-dry, salty wine with a tart lemon drop character, distinct minerality and some unabsorbed CO2. In an extremely austere style but shows more body than its 11.5% alcohol would suggest. Hipster sommelier alert: this one's for you. For all others: you've been warned."

Helen & Joey Estate "Inara" Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2016

91 Our Score
(10/2017) We absolutely LOVE this wine and cannot wait for you to try it! An initial pop of tropical fruit on the nose extends to the palate with flavors of pineapple, mango and Meyer lemon curd. Stony minerality is complemented by a sophisticated mouthfeel from the lees contact and five months in Troncais oak. The complexity is what sets the Inara Chardonnay apart from the crowd. Only 333 cases produced. If you need the perfect pairing for grilled chicken, grilled vegetables or even spicy tuna at your favorite sushi BYO, you'll want to grab a case of this estate grown gem.

Josten & Klein "Sua Sponte" Leutesdorf Riesling 2013

91 Our Score
(4/2019) Though officially a dry wine, this Mittelrhein Riesling shows a touch of playful sweetness at the beginning, finishing with dry, complex, lifting acidity. As this is a six-year-old wine, secondary flavors are beginning to reveal themselves in a splendid fashion, revealing honeyed yellow apple, baked red pear and deep yellow flowers. The lively acidity is very neatly tucked into a medium-plus frame, with a salty, lengthy, balanced finish.
