Wine Spectator
(5/31/2019) "This bold red is intense and expressive. Cassis and blueberry flavors mingle with cola, cocoa and licorice notes. Chewy tannins and balsamic acidity amplify the impact. Heady, ripe and in the modern style. Monastrell. Drink now through 2024. 10,000 cases made, 9,000 cases imported."

Bodegas Enrique Mendoza "La Tremenda" Alicante Monastrell 2017

(4/30/2019) "The pure Monastrell 2017 La Tremenda always represents great value and showcases the behavior of the grape in the Mediterranean climate and soil from Alicante. The grapes from 25-year-old vines fermented in small stainless steel vats, and the wine matured in French oak barrels for six months. There are notes of fresh fruit, rosemary and thyme, with clean aromas, open and expressive. The palate is juicy and round, and this is an entry-level red that represents the higher volume in the winery. This wine reflects the changes over the last seven or eight years: they do three tries of the harvest, and the first bunches tend to go to this wine. The well-seasoned barrels also go to this wine, and the vinification is much softer. The result is fruit-driven, with just a spicy twist. 2017 seems a lot cooler in the Mediterranean part of Spain than in most of the inland regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero and so on. This is a bargain Monastrell."

(4/30/2019) "The new 2018 Coleccion Origen El Vivero de Usaldon is an homage to the old Usaldon vineyard that Bernabe used to work that was ripped out and replaced by almonds. It contained Rojal, Garnacha Peluda and Forcalla del Arco that were used to plant one hectare of mixed varieties, which were used for this wine. It's a five-year-old vineyard in Finca Casa Balaguer, and they used 30% full clusters and the rest uncrushed grapes to ferment in tinajas with natural yeasts, pressed after it finished fermenting and put back in the tinajas for four months. It's clean, precise and quite fruit driven but not banal, with an earthy touch. The palate is medium-bodied and revealed fine tannins and good freshness. It's 13% alcohol and feels just perfect and very balanced. The price for these new wines has not yet been set."
