Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese #5 2016

93 Mosel Fine Wines
94 James Suckling
(6/2017) "Great interplay of creaminess and raciness, and there's the classic cassis note of this site with a great mineral freshness. Very long and pure. Try to live clean, take regular exercise and hope you'll be around when it's fully mature."

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemaker's Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

Leitz Geisenheimer Rothenberg Riesling Eiswein 2010

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $89.99!
94 Vinous, Joel Payne
(1/2012) "Bright aromas of camomile tea, orange rind and lemon oil, plus a whiff of smoky botrytis. The supple black cherry flavor is animated by finely chiseled minerality. Dense yet vibrant, this is what eiswein should be in a vintage that produced very few examples of this quality."

Alzinger "Ried Liebenberg" Smaragd Riesling 2017

94 Wine Spectator
(3/1/2019) "Elegant, with razor-like acidity slicing through the richly spiced core of red peach and quince. Silky and nuanced, with a racy but youthfully intense profile. The mouthwatering finish shows hints of star anise and citrus. Needs some time to unravel completely. Best from 2022 through 2032. 78 cases imported."

Les Vins Pirouettes Le Frankstein Grand Cru Riesling d'Eric 2016

91 Our Score
(3/2016) This delicious Rielsling from Les Vins Pirouettes comes from the grand cru vineyard of Frankstein (not Frankenstein, but the label playfully nods to the pop culture monster). It is fermented in tank with indigenous yeast and zero sulfur, then aged on the lees for 12 months in small, neutral barrels. It is bottles unfined and unfiltered, resulting in a pure expression of Grand Cru Riesling from Alsace. Fresh fruit flavors of peach, yellow pear and green honeydew melon are met with incredible depth of wet stones and dried white flowers. The slightest hint of sweetness on the finish allows the flavors to linger. A fine pairing with spicy Asian cuisine, grilled sausages or all on its own.

Peter Lauer "Fass 12" Unterstenberg Mosel Riesling 2015

91 Vinous, David Schildknecht
92 Mosel Fine Wines
(6/2016) "This offers ample and inviting scents of kumquat, grapefruit, yellow peach and dried herbs on the nose. The wine is smooth and elegant on the palate, where more minerals blend beautifully well into yellow fruits and herbs. The finish is smooth and intense without ever being over-powering. This hugely gains from airing as it sheds its initial touch of CO2 and gains in complexity and finesse by the day, even after 10 days. This is a little masterpiece of delicately off-dry Riesling, and it is worth waiting for its maturity window. 2022-2030."

Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese 2016

93 James Suckling
93 Wine Advocate
93 Vinous, David Schildknecht
(1/2018) "Scents of ripe pear and pineapple garlanded in heliotrope set the stage for a polished, subtly creamy palate performance at once luscious, invigoratingly tangy, and loaded with seductive inner-mouth perfume. I thought the corresponding Kabinett exquisitely delicate, but this Spatlese seems virtually weightless. The lingering finish is almost like an inhalation of flowers and wet stone, save for the tingling impingement of pear skin, a faint tang of pineapple core and a nip of cress. I sense that I may be in the minority, but I perceive 2016 as one of those vintages chez Schaefer where Himmelreich gives Domprobst a very serious run for its money."

Peter Lauer "Fass 8" Ayler Kupp Mosel Riesling Kabinett 2015

91+ Mosel Fine Wines
(6/2016) "This offers a delicately ample nose of yellow fruits, ginger and spices. The wine starts off on the round side before fiery acidity brings zest and vibrancy to the finish. This is refreshing, light and elegant and one magically goes for more. The tart side in the finish will disappear with a few years of bottle aging, and it could then easily warrant an even higher rating. 2025-2040."

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2012

Typical retail on this gorgeous Riesling from J.J. Prum is $46! Our price is lowest in the country!
94 Wine Advocate
(2/27/2015) "The 2012 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (AP #17 13) is more cool and mineral/stony on the nose than the Himmelreich Spätlese, but also intensely fruity at the moment, offering ripe peach, mango and pineapple aromas and crushed chocolate. Gorgeously rich, juicy and piquant on the palate, this lush and sensual Riesling seems riper and slightly sweeter, but also more intense compared with the Himmelreich. Its persistent finish is nicely mineral and salty on the aftertaste. This is a rich and potent wine with great potential. Drink 2020 - 2050."
