Corliss Estates Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

A superstar from the winemaking team of Andrew Trio and Philippe Melka. It's not often when Stephen Tanzer gives this kind of a review to a Cabernet!
96+ Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
(7/2016) "(Aged in 70% new oak for 28 months; this bottling will be labeled Red Mountain beginning with the 2014 vintage): Bright red-ruby. Extremely primary, pure aromas and flavors of inky cassis, blueberry, licorice and minerals. Tight and high-pitched in the mouth, displaying outstanding depth, energy and minerality but extremely closed in the early going. This huge wine finishes with chewy, late-arriving, toothdusting tannins that will require cellaring, even after the wine is released in the fall of 2018. Corliss has increased its use of tight-grained Saint-Martin barrels in this wine, and it will need a while to absorb the oak. Distinctly cool, even a bit medicinal, for the 2013 vintage, this is likely to be very long-lived. Winemaker Andre Trio told me he added a bit of Petit Verdot 'for back-palate texture and finer-grained tannins.' Drinking window: 2022 - 2034."

The Crane Assembly "El Coco" Napa Valley Red Blend 2015

95 Wine Advocate
(6/29/2018) "A blend of 56% Zinfandel, 27% Petite Sirah and 17% Merlot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 G.B. Crane Vineyard el Coco gives up a very seductive nose of fruitcake, chocolate box, fragrant earth and incense with hints of raspberry pie and blueberry compote plus a waft of Indian spices. Concentrated, full-bodied and completely packed with dried berries and exotic spice layers, it has a firm, chewy texture and plenty of freshness to boost the very long finish. 750 cases produced."

Domaine Jehan Emonin Puligny-Montrachet 2016

94 Our Score
(8/2018) This wine is produced by famed Meursault vigneron Vincent Bouzeron. We tasted with Vincent in his cellar earlier this year and wanted to buy every wine he makes. This guy is a rockstar, and his 2016 Puligny-Montrachet - sourced from hand worked vineyards near the top of the slope, just above Folatieres - can hang with the best. Fermentation is traditional, with native yeasts only. Raised in barrel, roughly 25% of which was new, this luxurious and tense Chardonnay delivers complex fruit and mineral tones with a nervy chalk spine throughout. Long, youthful and delicious, this wine will drink fantastically through 2028.

Hartford Court "Stone Cote" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2015

Only 476 cases produced of this stunning Chardonnay from a small, rather remarkable parcel in the Durell Vineyard...
98 Jeb Dunnuck
(6/5/2018) "From blocks in the Durrell vineyard (the parcel is rolled river rocks soils), the 2015 Chardonnay Stone Cote Vineyard offers a medium gold color as well as a sensational bouquet of ripe, caramelized citrus, crushed rocks, tangerine, and marine/seashell-like aromas and flavors. Aged 16 months in 37% new French oak, it's deep, rich, and thrillingly textured, with bright, juicy acidity keeping it vibrant and focused. It's a stunning Chardonnay to drink over the coming decade."

Bodegas Bhilar "Phinca Lali" Rioja 2013

92+ Our Score
(8/2018) This powerful single-vineyard red is one of the most unique examples of Rioja you will find. The fruit comes from a tiny (.54-hectare) vineyard planted back in 1910. Today, these old bush vines are farmed naturally using biodynamic practices and yield a wine of deep concentration with hauntingly wonderful aromatics. Blending 90% Tempranillo with 10% Viura (a white varietal that contributes additional freshness and aromatics), the 2013 Phinca Lali sings of beautiful dark fruits of black cherry, black berry and dark raspberry that are layered with aromatic floral and herbal tones including violets and spearmint , deep nuances of rocky earth, and a potpourri of exotic spice notes. This full-bodied and full-flavored wine is still youthful, so make sure to decant for a couple of hours. Even better, throw a few bottles in the cellar and let it develop even further over the next decade or longer. A mere 990 bottles (about 83 cases) were produced of this stunning "new school" Rioja.

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2013

95 Wine Spectator
94 James Suckling
94 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
94+ Wine Advocate
(2/28/2018) "The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is absolutely unique in terms of its aromatic display. To me, the nose is particularly beautiful because I have a preference for balsamic notes of cola, mint or medicinal herb (that may not be to everyone's liking). You get those in spades here. These aromas are often more prominent in cooler vintages like 2013 in the Brunello appellation. In this case, they resemble intense eucalyptus. There is subtle fruit at the back, with wild berry and plum. The mouthfeel here is absolutely silky, fresh and streamlined. It is stitched finely together like lace. I am curious to see how a wine like this ages and whether the aromas hold tight or eventually fall flat. I would suggest a slightly shorter drinking window. But for now, this is my kind of Brunello. Bottoms up! Drink Date: 2020 - 2030."

(10/2017) "Since 2006, this property has been owned by the Cazes family (of Chateau Lynch Bages in Pauillac), and the wines seem to get better with each passing year. The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape is a full-bodied, supple but richly tannic blend of 61% Grenache, 22% Syrah and 17% Mourvèdre that spent time in foudres, old barriques and concrete, maturing into a strong, concentrated effort loaded with cherry fruit and spice."

94 Jeb Dunnuck
(11/30/2017) "Checking in as 62% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc that was brought up in roughly 70% new oak, the 2015 Château Laroze is straight up gorgeous. Cassis, black cherries, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings and hints of tobacco all give way to a ripe, sexy, concentrated Saint-Emilion that has sweet, polished tannin, plenty of mid-palate depth and a great finish. This beauty builds with time in the glass, is seamless, and just a sensational drink. Maturity 2018 - 2033."

(8/2018) This new label by Newton, replacing what was known as their "Red Label" wines, really delivers the goods. Buglioni "L'Imperfetto" Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso 2014

90 Our Score
(8/2018) The Amarone and Valpolicella Ripasso bottlings from Buglioni have been some of the finest we have ever featured. We were recently presented their 2014 Valpolicella Classico, labeled "L'Imperfetto." We loved it so much that we had to squeeze it in one day before going to press on our August newsletter. What's neat about this bottling is that, even though it's not Ripasso, a portion of the grapes are left out to dry, imparting a touch of the Ripasso and Amarone signature style. Prior to release, the wine saw 12 months aging in stainless steel followed by six months in barrel. This treatment has allowed the freshness of the delicious ripe fruit to be preserved while softening the palate and adding wonderful complex nuances of baking spice, leather and both red and black licorice on the finish. This full and generous red should be enjoyed with hearty pasta dishes and hard cheeses. Bravo!
