90+ Cellars "Lot 26" Barolo 2014

92 Our Score
(11/2018) The "Lot 26" Barolo is from a small, family-owned winery in Piedmont. The care and pedigree are delightfully apparent the moment the cork is popped. With a bit of air, this wine shows an abundance of character with classic flavors of cherry, rose hips, tar, leather and wisp of baking spices on the finish. The 2014 "Lot 26" over-delivers for the modest price and will drink well over the next seven years.

Armando Parusso "44th Anniversary" Barolo 2014

93 Wine Advocate
94+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2018) "Marco Parusso's 2014 Barolo is one of the most stunning wines of the vintage. In 2014, Parusso made a single Barolo that incorporates fruit from Mariondino, Mosconi, Le Coste and most of Bussia. Rich, deep and explosive on the palate, with stunning aromatic presence and overall intensity, the 2014 is remarkably vivid. Beams of supporting tannin give the wine its energy and persistence. Wild cherry, plum, mocha, dried flowers and lavender are some of the many nuances that take shape as this superb Barolo continues to show off its remarkable complexity and personality. The 2014 was vinified with 100% whole clusters and spent 24 months in French oak, 100% of it new. Drink 2022 - 2039."

Azelia "Margheria" Barolo 2014

92 Wine Advocate
92 Decanter
94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2018) "The 2014 Barolo Margheria opens with beguiling, deep-pitched aromatics. Bright red cherry and plum fruit, licorice, anise, rose water and orange peel are some of the many notes that give the wine its personality. Bright, saline and sculpted in feel, the 2014 is going to need a few years to fully unwind, but it is unquestionably vibrant and expressive today. The 2014 spent three years in cask. Drink 2022 - 2039."

Bergadano Barolo 2012

91 Our Score
(6/2019) Imported directly to Chicago by a local Italian specialist, this classic Barolo eschews the traditional importer mark-up, resulting in an absurdly low price. The 2012 Bergadano gives chewy tannins, excellent acidity and lovely flavors of dried flowers, red earth, perfume and dried red fruits. Drinkable now and over the next 5 to 7 years, it is a great Barolo to serve to your guests. They'll never guess how much you paid!

Franco Molino "Rocche dell'Annunziata" Riserva Barolo 2012

93 Our Score
(10/2018) A delicious single-site Barolo Riserva for less than 40 bucks? Wow! The wines from this small grower are directly imported to Chicago, a model that keeps pricing lower than their contemporaries. With a hint of new wood, the flavors of dried red fruit, mushroom, and savory tea are well integrated. This is a powerful wine with a warm back palate and a chewy front. In a world of $100 Baroli, this seems almost too inexpensive! Drinkable now and through 2030.

G. D. Vajra "Albe" Barolo 2013

93 Wine Spectator
92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2017) "Vajra's 2013 Barolo Albe is beautifully perfumed, sensual and expressive in this vintage, with a bit less overt fruit and more aromatic/structural intensity than is often the case. The style of the Albe has always favored a more succulent expression of Nebbiolo that is quite different from the single-vineyard wines, but the 2013 suggests Vajra may be moving the Albe closer in line stylistically to their other Barolos, which I think is a positive. In any event, there is an element of restraint in the 2013 that is hugely appealing. The Albe is a blend of fruit from Fossati, Coste di Vergne and La Volta aged in 75 hectoliter casks. The Albe may be the single best value in Barolo today. As for the 2013, don't miss it!"

G. D. Vajra "Albe" Barolo 2014

91 Wine Spectator
91 Wine Advocate
(6/29/2018) "A tribute to local tradition, the 2014 Barolo Albe represents an assembly of fruit from various vineyard plots throughout the area. Winemaking is classic in approach with a 25-day maceration period and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. This vintage shows silky, fine lines and a more accessible approach for near and medium-term drinking. I would recommend a few more years of bottle aging, however, to allow the wine the time to grow in texture and mouthfeel."

G. D. Vajra "Bricco Delle Viole" Barolo 2014

96 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2018) "The 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is positively stunning. There are many things about this wine that are super-impressive, but what stands out most is how soft and silky the tannins are. Because of that, the 2014 is much more approachable than it usually is, and yet also conveys the feeling of translucence that is such a signature of this site and wine. I am not sure I have ever tasted a young Bricco delle Viole with this much purity of fruit. The 2014 is total class. Don't miss it. Drink 2022-2044."

Luigi Oddero & Figli "Vigna Rionda" Barolo 2008

96 Wine Enthusiast
(10/1/2015) "A hallmark bottling from one of Serralunga's prime vineyard sites, this gorgeous Barolo has structure, breeding and class. It opens with classic aromas of perfumed berry, leather, forest floor, tobacco and a balsamic note while the impeccable palate delivers wild cherry, crushed raspberry, strawberry, chopped herb, white pepper and licorice. It's still tight and tannic so give it time to fully develop to is full, amazing potential. Drink 2023-2033. Cellar Selection."

Luigi Pira "Serralunga" Barolo 2014

92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(11/2018) "The 2014 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is the only wine Giampaolo Pira made in 2014, and is a blend of all the best fruit from the Marenca, Margheria and Collina Rionda vineyards. Powerful and dense in the glass, but in the mid-weight style of the year, Pira's 2014 has a lot to offer. There is plenty of the depth and power readers have come to expect from Pira's wines, but naturally tempered by the personality of the year. Iron, smoke, cedar, savory herbs, tobacco and cured meats add to the wine's brooding, virile personality. Drinking Window: 2019 - 2028."
