Raul Perez "Ultreia - La Cova de la Raposa" Bierzo 2018
This special, singular Mencia is one of our favorite wines of the year. It is loaded to the brim with bright herb-laced, spicy black fruit with incredible length on the hearty finish. Serious stuff, made in tiny amounts and at Vin Chicago, priced $10 lower than any other retailer in the country - last we checked. Grab one of the 600 bottles produced quick!

(6/30/2020) "Cool vintages in warm zones seem to work, and it shows in the 2018 Ultreia Cova de la Raposa, which was not produced in 2017 because of the frost. There is only a 500-liter oak barrel, and the wine feels quite fine for the warmer exposure. The sandy soils produce stress in this vineyard, but in a rainier year like 2018, they are an advantage. This feels harmonious, with black rather than red fruit and some dusty tannins, a little more rustic and on the Rhone side more than Burgundy. There are 600 bottles of this. It was bottled in December 2019."

(6/30/2020) "La Poulosa is quite regular and ripe, with notes of prunes, and even though there is more freshness in 2018, keeping the profile of the vineyard, which is very strong. There is more fruit here, and it's juicy and approachable, with integrated oak (they started replacing the 225-liter oak barrels with 500-liter ones), more freshness and a livelier palate. The tannins are round, with no edges, despite the fact that all the La Vizcaína range ferments with 100% full clusters. Some 5,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. Drink Date: 2020 - 2026"

(3/2021) Gregory Perez crafts this delicious red from predominantly Mencia grapes farmed in two villages in the Bierzo zone. He includes a small percentage of Garnacha Tintorera in the blend and uses 10% whole clusters in the wild yeast fermentation. Using minimal sulfur at the winery and bottling without fining or filtration, purity is the name of the game here. Give this young red several minutes to open up in the glass and you'll be met with a delectable marriage of yummy, spicy, herbaceous Zin-like fruit along with a whiff of dark roast that is electrified by tangy, floral, mineral freshness like you'd find in Gamay. Holy matrimony! This sassy, medium-bodied red ought to appeal well to fans of Willamette Valley Pinot and anyone looking to experiment. Pour tonight with a pork chop smothered by apple and fennel slaw.
