Bedrock Wine Co. "Evangelho Vineyard" Contra Costa County Red 2017

92 Our Score
(10/2018) "The Bedrock team now owns a large portion of this famed vineyard. Blending several old vines together to make this site-based red. It's about the place, which Bedrock describes..."Own-rooted on forty-foot-deep banks of beach sand alongside the Sacramento River Delta, Evangelho is a totally unique site. Planted in the 1890s, the vineyard is a viticultural survivor-wedged between a PG&E plant, a Burger King, and a motel that rents rooms by the hour. A field-blend of Zinfandel, Carignane, Mourvedre, and others, the wines are fresh, bright, and typically have some of the lowest pHs of any of the Bedrock wines." Special juice."

Neyers "Evangelho Vineyard" Mourvedre 2016

This wine is often too small of a production-level for most of the wine press to pay attention to. The previous vintage was a mere 90 cases! This pure varietal wine sources from 130-year-old vines planted on the Evangelho vineyard. Vinification is very traditional, all native yeasts and aging in used French oak barrels for 12 months. It's a very Provencal model leading to wine with a slight rustic edge and a mere 13.3% abv. This is not a goopy, jammy kind of wine. Saddle up for treat!

(4/1/2017) "Big, powerful and confidently ripe, this full-bodied wine oozes with luscious blackberry, wild sage and blueberry flavors that seemingly melt in the mouth. A great example of the late harvest style without being sweet, it's dry, concentrated and persistent on the finish."

Three Wine Company Contra Costa County Petite Sirah 2015

90 Our Score
(2/2019) Matt Cline knows his way around Petite Sirah. This bottling comes from an old vine site in Contra Costa County where the sandy soils are literally like walking on a beach! This unique microclimate is perfect for old vine sustainability, as the vineyard destroying louse "phylloxera" cannot survive in the sand. Deliciously ripe and powerful, with a deep, impactful color, this is not a delicate offering. Try with short ribs or grilled strip steaks!
