La Torretta "Il Motto" Ghemme 2009

93 Our Score
(1/2019) The little-known region of Ghemme is capable of turning out some world-class Nebbiolo that can really give the wines of Barolo a run for their money. The 2009 "Il Motto" is La Torretta's current release - just imagine what a 10-year-old, cellar-aged wine of this quality would cost coming out of Napa! It is laden with secondary flavors that lay upon a subtle bed of fruit. After an hour in the decanter, beautiful aromas of dried cherry, macerated cranberry and dried fig begin to emerge, along with notes of wild mushroom, shaved truffle, tobacco, dried tea leaves, and dried red flower petals. Take a sip and this medium- to full-bodied red will flow across your palate with an exquisite balance of fresh acidity and chewy tannins. To say we were floored by this bottling would be a massive understatement. Powerful enough to stand up to a grilled rib-eye or rack of lamb, it also has the style and finesse to complement a plate of pasta with wild mushrooms or a truffle risotto. Tasted blind, it would be tough to believe this wine is not from Barolo.

Vigneti Valle Roncati "Leblanque" Ghemme Nebbiolo 2012

92 Our Score
(11/2018) While wines from Barolo continue to go up in price, the area of Alto Piemonte - north of Barolo and Barbaresco - is becoming more familiar to American Nebbiolo lovers. This beautiful bottling of Nebbiolo comes from Ghemme, a small zone which produces elegant yet powerful wines. Offering delicious red fruits, bright acidity, full tannins and fantastic length, this authentic Piedmont red is a terrific wine and a terrific value.
