(5/2021) This youthful Stelvin-sealed 375mL bottle of single-vineyard Gruner shows zero signs of maturity. From a ninth generation winemaking family, the Malat's have made great wine on the south bank of the Danube River since 1722. "Hohlgraben" is a single vineyard wine that is fermented with its own natural yeast and matures for about six to eight months is huge old 2000 liter barrels before being bottled unfined. A discrete cornucopia of white pear, pineapple pith, radish, yellow plum teeters between richness and raciness. A nicely complete wine that doesn't shout, which now routinely sells for over $40 for a full-size bottle. Try it for your starter course.
