(7/2020) In Italy wine regions are defined by their respective "Noble Grapes." For Tuscany it is Sangiovese, in Piemonte it's Nebbiolo. In Montefalco, the grape is called Sagrantino. Sagrantino brings a power and taste profile rarely seen in Italian reds. The kicker is that, according to scientific testing, it is potentially the most tannic grape in the world, and bottlings of 100% Sagrantino can be too aggressive in their infancy. The winemakers in Montefalco have thus come up with ways to make Sagrantino more approachable. At Scacciadiavoli, they blend in Sangiovese and Merlot to temper the raw tenacity of Sagrantino. The end product is an incredibly graceful wine with a beautiful nose of cherry, raspberry and spice followed by darker fruit flavors, earthy underbrush and a hint of oak on the palate. This wine has great acidity and the weight to pair with a multitude of dishes. Try with Pasta Bolognese, Porchetta or heavier stews. Umbria is known for their black truffles. If you are able to add some shavings to your dish, that will make the match even better!

Colpetrone Rosso di Montefalco 2015

Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(4/2020) "The 2015 Colpetrone Rosso di Montefalco is much more refined and perfumed than I would have expected from this warm vintage, showing peppery herbs and dusty florals, plus crushed red wild berries and a hint of dusty earth. On the palate, silky textures envelop all that they touch in ripe cherry fruit and sweet spices, made juicy through vibrant acidity and minerals, as round tannins slowly settle in. The finish is medium in length, leaning more toward the tart black fruit spectrum, yet with a salty twang that makes the mouth water. The 2017 is really quite stunning today. A blend of 70% Sangiovese with equal parts Merlot and Sagrantino. Drinking window: 2022 - 2026"
