Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemaker's Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

Brovia "Brea Vigna Ca' Mia" Barolo 2011

95 Our Score
94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(3/2015) "Lavender, mint, sage, smoke, tobacco and plums are all laced together in the 2011 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca'Mia. As always, the Ca'Mia is a decidedly vertical Barolo built on a spine of persistent tannin, but in 2011 there is a little bit of added polish that serves to soften the contours. Tucked off the main road, Brea remains one of the least well-known vineyards in Serralunga. The 2011 is a great wine to start exploring some of the nuances of this site. A huge finish that brings together power and voluptuousness captures the pure radiance of the year. Drinking window 2019 - 2036."

Benjamin Leroux Puligny Montrachet 2011

94 Our Score
(4/2018) This seven-year-old Puligny-Montrachet from superstar winemaker Benjamin Leroux is drinking brilliantly. With a deliciously dense and creamy mouthfeel, this perfectly aged white Burgundy offers tremendous minerality and flavor along with a finish that goes on and on and on. We love the mature fruit flavors of baked apple, honey-glazed pear and preserved lemon along with salted Marcona almond, citrus blossom, chalk and rocky-clay earth tones. The acidity is brisk and balancing, resulting in a wine that will work well at the table with anything from roast chicken to grilled salmon. Sourced from three different vineyards, averaging 40 years of age, Leroux used only indigenous yeasts for fermentation before aging in 300-liter barrels, 15% of which were new. It is totally drinkable now, especially with a good decanting, and will keep nicely for another 5-7 years.

Benjamin Leroux "Murgers des Dents de Chien" St. Aubin 1 er Cru Blanc 2011

Special close-out pricing on this ready-to-drink 1er Cru white Burgundy from Benjamin Leroux!
92+ Our Score
(5/2018) Winemaker Benjamin Leroux is part of a new wave of Burgundian wine makers crafting wine in their own unique style in an area ruled by tradition. The style of this wine focuses on the purity of the fruit and the intense minerality of the "Les Murgers des Dents de Chien" premier cru vineyard. Aged in only 15% new oak, well below the average for Premier Cru Chardonnay in the region, and bottled with screw-caps to avoid corked bottles, this 2011 bottling is a great example of how high quality white Burgundies can age 5-10+ years.

Arnaldo-Caprai "Collepiano" Sagrantino di Montefalco 2011

Intro
93 Wine Spectator
(3/31/2017) "There's good cut to this structured red, with pure notes of raspberry coulis and dried cherry wrapped around burly tannins. Accents of licorice, mocha and tar ring out on the lasting, grippy finish. Decant this well in advance or hold in the cellar. Best from 2020 through 2035."

Tenuta Degli Sforza "Marchesano" Colli d'Imola Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $47.99! This Cabernet Sauvignon made our jaws drop. Cab lovers, do not miss.
94 Our Score
(4/2017) This is as good of a $50 Cabernet Sauvignon as you will ever find. Interestingly, it's not from Napa Valley but from a very small, eccentric producer in Emilia Romagna. The hand-picked grapes, some of which were allowed to dry by over-ripening on the vine, were vinified and then aged for 24 months in small, fine oak and another year in bottle before release. The resulting wine has an incredible nose that is intense, complex and loaded with wood spice, leather and dark berry aromas. The palate is oozing with dark berries, oak and spice with gripping tannins that smooth out nicely on the oh-so-long finish. Complex and layered with serious depth of flavor, this outstanding Cabernet is done just the way we like 'em at Vin Chicago.

Domaine Meyer-Fonne "Sporen" Grand Cru Gewurztraminer 2011

94+ International Wine Cellar
(11/2012) "Bright golden-yellow. Knockout aromas of tangerine, lemon rind and spicy lemon jelly, all lifted by white flowers. Pure, deep flavors of citrus fruits and sweet brown spices are nicely lifted by refreshing acidity. No botrytized grapes here. This superb wine should age very well. These 40-year-old vines actually grow in the Obere-Sporen, which means Sporen du Haut (or "high" Sporen), where there aren't many owners. According to Meyer, the rich subsoil and small surface stones make for intense, profound, long-lived wines."
