Concha y Toro "Don Melchor" Puente Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

96 Wine Spectator
98 James Suckling
94 Wine Advocate
(4/28/2017) "The current vintage is the 2014 Don Melchor, one of the icons of Maipo. The wine has been produced since 1987 from the best lots from their 127 hectares of vineyards in the Puente Alto appellation on alluvial terraces of the Maipo River at 650 meters altitude. In 2014 the bottled wine comes from 20 lots of free-run wine and 35 lots of press wine and contains some 8% Cabernet Franc. It matured in French oak barrels, 65% of them new, for some 15 months. The oak is perfectly integrated, and seeing how the wines from this terroir age, I wouldn't worry at all. This was a low yielding year, a balanced vintage not a lot warmer than 2013, which has resulted in a classical Don Melchor combining power with elegance, with those refined tannins and superb balance. There is a mixture of red and black fruit and even some fresh orange peel notes. Seeing how the older vintages age in bottle, it would be a shame to drink this now; and even if it's drinkable, I prefer them some ten years after the vintage. This is produced from virtually the same vineyards as Almaviva, yet the wines are so different."

Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta "Le Petit Clos" Colchagua Red Blend 2014

93 James Suckling
93 Wine & Spirits
(6/2017) "Petit Clos is the new younger brother of the classic carmenere-based Clos Apalta, a second selection of the estate's old vineyards in El Condor de Apalta, where some of the vines are almost 100 years old. This blend is 30 percent carmenere, while Clos is more than 70 percent. The balance of Petit is cabernet sauvignon (40 percent), merlot, as well as some petit verdot from younger vines. Dark cherry and dark, bitter chocolate lend a savory note to balance the lovely, sweet notes of blackberry in this wine, which is tighter, more focused and narrower than its big brother. It is fresher, too, but with a similar depth of flavor coming from these venerable old vines."

Casa Lapostolle "Cuvee Alexandre" Colchagua Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

91 Our Score
95 James Suckling
90 Wine Advocate
(4/28/2017) "The 2014 Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vines planted in 1920 on granitic soils in the Apalta Valley in Colchagua. It contains 10% Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel tanks, and 20% did it in oak vats. The wine matured in French oak barrels for ten months. In Colchagua, 2014 was less warm than 2015, and this Cabernet seems to have behaved very well this year. It's quite classical and shows balsamic aromas of camphor and cedar wood with a core of black fruit. The palate shows the consistency of the tannins of the variety, with a good mid palate. One for food and able to age in bottle."

Pedro Parra y Familia "Pencopolitano" Cauguenes Central Valley Red 2015

92+ Wine Advocate
(4/28/2017) "The juicy and fresh 2015 Pencopolitano blends grapes and places: Carignan, Syrah, Malbec, Carmenere and Cinsault from Itata and Cauquenes. It matured in concrete and stainless steel vats. The nose is an intoxicating mixture of wild flowers, aromatic herbs and spices, with bright red fruit, hints of cassis and pollen, with quite a lot of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and that minerality of the granite soils that provides very good freshness and a tasty and long finish. This is a superb red blend for the upper segment of the by-the-glass market. 13,596 bottles were filled in March 2016. Drink Date 2017 - 2020."

J. Bouchon "Pais Salvaje" Maule Valley Pais 2017

90 Our Score
90 Wine & Spirits
(6/2018) "Over the last five years, the pais grape has gone from being dismissed by most Chilean winemakers to finding a place in the portfolios of some of the country's most important wineries. Bouchon farms this from vines that grow up trees instead of trellises, producing a delicate wine with notes of red fruit, sharp acidity and the earthiness that's characteristic of the grape. It's the kind of wine that might have quenched the thirst of the Spanish conquistadors who brought pais to Chile."

A Los Vinateros Bravos "El Tunel" Itata Valley Cinsault 2016

90+ Our Score
(8/2018) "El Tunel" comes from old vine Cinsault grown in winemaker Leonardo Erazo's home vineyard. Average age of these old vines is 60 years old, not too shabby to have in your backyard! Vines this old are a common occurrence in the far flung southern reaches of Itata, many averaging far, far older. This idilic region is where Leonardo has come to embrace traditional winemaking techniques and show reverence to these old vines. Everything is farmed organically, as it has been for generations. The granite soils impart these old vines with beautiful deep mineral tones, with threads of spice and smoke weaving their way around the core of delicate red fruits. Fermented and aged in concreted to preserve freshness, this is entirely made by hand from start to finish in very small batches. Southern Chile is churning out some amazing revelations, and the quality in this traditionally made wine is impressive. Lovely now, this will also age rather gracefully for the next handful of years.

Vinateros Bravos "Granitico" Itata Pais 2016

90+ Our Score
(5/2019) Named for the granite soils from which it is farmed, the Granitico is one of the purest expressions of Pais (and Chilean wine in general) one can find. Planted in one of the birthplaces of Chilean viticulture, these vines are minimum 150 years old, and winemaker Leo Erazos interferes as little as possible in the winemaking process, with minimal sulpher added at bottling. This Pais is natural but elegant, with ample aromas and flavors of dried flowers and dried berries over leaves and crushed rocks, and can be enjoyed now or over the next couple of years.

Arboleda Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2016

93 James Suckling
91 Wine Advocate
(4/28/2017) "2016 Pinot Noir Aconcagua Costa was produced with fruit grown from two specific plots from their vineyards at 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak for 11 months (only 10% new). It has a nice nose mixing spices, sour cherries and a touch of earth and forest floor, even though the wine is so evidently young. The palate is very tasty and juicy, with super fine tannins and a remarkable, long finish. 6,500 bottles were filled in February 2017. Drink Date 2017 - 2019."

A Los Vinateros Bravos "Pais Volcanico" Itata Valley Pais 2015

90 Wine Advocate
(4/2017) "The somehow delicate 2015 Volcanico Pais is produced with a variety thought to be rustic, but in specific soils it can provide wines of finesse. This is produced with fruit from dry-farmed vines planted in 1890 on basalt slope soils of volcanic origin - hence the name - that give naturally low yields. It fermented and matured in concrete vats for one year. Compared with the Granite, this has like a charred, slightly blurry note, not as focused and fresh. But it's all relative, because in isolation this is delicious, recognizable as País, with a core of red fruit and flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with tasty flavors. 10,000 bottles were filled in June 2016."

Clos des Fous "Cauquenina" Maule Valley Vinas Viejas Red 2013

93 Wine Advocate
(12/2015) "The nose of the balsamic blend 2013 Cauquenina reminded me of the Latuffa -- exotic, perfumed, minty, hinting on eucalyptus, cola nut and dried flowers. It's a multi-grape blend from six old vineyards, some field blends and some with separate varieties; it's made up of almost half of Carignan (Cariñena) with Syrah and Malbec, as well as some 5% to 6% each of Carmenere and Portuguais Bleu, with no oak whatsoever. The palate is superbly integrated and compact, very tasty with lively acidity and a mineral finish. Again, this has a marked style/profile, very showy and aromatic. This has to be one of the best values in Chile, a pleasant red that is so easy to drink, it might be dangerous."
