Bodegas El Nido "El Nido" Jumilla 2015

95 Wine Advocate
(12/29/2017) "Following the style of the Clio from the same vintage, the 2015 El Nido is a powerful, ripe and concentrated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Monastrell aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 23 months. It's bottled with 16% alcohol, not a shy wine but not one that shows heat, as it keeps the balance in an XL way. It feels concentrated, powerful and young, but the oak is surprisingly more integrated than in the 2014. As it happens with many wines, this is not for everybody, as it has a marked style, but for those who like this profile, this could very well be the finest vintage of El Nido to date. It can be had with powerful food, but it should be better with a few years in bottle. 5,500 bottles were filled in September 2017. Drink Date: 2019 - 2030."

Bodegas El Nido "Clio" Jumilla 2016

Big 1.5-liter magnum bottles of this Vin Chicago favorite!
92+ Our Score
(11/2018) Big, beautiful and voluptuous, the 2016 Clio is a glass-staining purple in color with a nose that exhibits blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and spicy wood tones. The palate is full, rich and explosive with flavors of black and red fruits plus a bit of smoky bacon. The warm and concentrated palate is wonderfully inviting. There's a reason this wine has such a cult following. If you like powerfully fruity, smooth and dense wines, this is for you!

Casa Castillo "Las Gravas" Jumilla Red 2015

94 Wine Advocate
(12/29/2017) "The 2015 Las Gravas is a classic Mediterranean blend of Monastrell with 15% each Garnacha and Syrah, with 15% alcohol after fermenting with part of full clusters and indigenous grapes and aging in used oak barrels for 19 months. 2015 is the last vintage that Las Gravas has some Syrah, as it adds some sweet fruit he wants to avoid. However, it shows fresh within the balsamic profile, with plenty of rosemary and thyme notes combined with floral undertones and the character of the esparto grass and tree bark that are textbook descriptors of the variety. Drink Date: 2018 - 2030."

Bodegas Volver "Tarima Hill" Alicante Monastrell 2015

(12/31/2017) "This red shows grace and depth. Black cherry, plum, mineral and smoke flavors mingle harmoniously over well-integrated tannins, while lively acidity keeps this focused. Not showy, but all the pieces fit together. Balanced, in the modern style. Monastrell. Drink now through 2025. Top 100 #17"

Bodegas Juan Gil "Silver Label" Jumilla Monastrell 2016

90+ Our Score
(3/2019) The "Silver Label" from the Juan Gil Family's home estate in Jumilla has been a Vin Chicago staff and customer favorite for well over a decade. With enough power and seriousness to keep a Cab-lover happy, it is fully loaded with dense and jammy dark flavors of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry along with a whiff of licorice and a hint of warm rocky earth. Full-bodied, yet soft and round, drink it with your weekend steak, on Taco Tuesday or all by itself.

Castano "Solanera" Vinas Viejas 2015

92 Jeb Dunnuck
92 Wine Advocate
(12/29/2017) "The 2015 Solanera used to wear the ultimate Spanglish label, which said 'Viñas Viejas of Monastrell' even if it was always a blend (in this vintage, the blend includes 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Garnacha Tintorera). The revamped 2015 has a completely different label that only keeps the 'viñas viejas' moniker. In this wine, from the joint venture with U.S. importer Eric Solomon that started in 1999, they used part of full clusters and sourced the grapes from Casa Marta, a nine-hectare, head-pruned, dry-farmed plot on very stony soils in the north of Yecla at the foot of the Mount Arabí. It fermented in concrete vats and open-top barrels and matured in barrique, each variety separately, for some ten months, after which it was blended and bottled. This is the vintage of the big change in this wine, where, as with the majority of its siblings, there is better balance and more integrated oak, more freshness and better balance. The nose is quite captivating, especially after some time in the glass, when it starts developing some floral aromas, perfect ripeness, no warmth or alcohol and a powerful, yet terribly balanced palate with concentration and elegance, fine-grained tannins and clean, focused flavors. This is my favorite Solanera to date." LG

Carchelo "C" Jumilla 2016

91 Our Score
(5/2019) Rich and round on the palate with a velvety finish, the 2016 Carchelo "C" is an over-delivering blend of 35% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Tempranillo and 10% Syrah. Each varietal was vinified separately, then blended together and aged for four months in French oak. Offering an intense perfume of dark berries and earth along with good complexity and great balance of berry, oak, mineral and acidity, this drinks like a $20+ bottle.

Bodegas Enrique Mendoza "La Tremenda" Monastrell 2016

92 Wine Advocate
(12/29/2017) "The 2016 La Tremenda is sourced from the vineyard that names the wine, from their estate El Chaconero in the village of Villena, a plot at 600 meters altitude planted some 25 years ago. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French barriques for six months. 2016 is a cooler year than 2014 or 2015, and the wines reflect it. It was not an easy year; they had to do a strict selection of grapes, and it paid off. It has the character of the variety, with its elegant rusticity with a fresh, herbal twist and a palate with fine-grained tannins, nicely textured and with a supple, very tasty finish. This is a superb introduction to Monastrell from Alicante at an incredible price."

Bodegas Volver "Tarima" Alicante Monastrell 2016

We tracked down one final pallet of this tasty, bargain-priced red!
92 James Suckling
(7/24/2017) "Great black fruit that is fully ripe without a hint of overripeness. This is a big, rich wine. Rather fine and generous tannins help it carry the high-ish alcohol. Almost silky at the long finish."
