Cume do Avia "Dos Canotos" Ribiero Tinto 2017

90+ Our Score
(5/2019) From Ribeiro's new natural winemakers at Cume do Avia, the medium-bodied Dos Canotos strikes a fine balance between the inky Souson that comprises the majority of the blend and the brightness and backbone of the remaining Caino Longo and Brancellao. Farmed organically and biodynamically and then aged in century-old chestnut vats, the aromas and flavors of fresh violets stirred into wild red and blackberries and dried herbs emulate something like the ripeness of Gamay crossed with the black-fruited earthiness of Northern Rhone Syrah. Though its refreshing acidity and bright fruit make it delicious out of the gates, its healthy structure and deep-rooted layers would benefit from a brief decanting, and even a year in the cellar.

Cume do Avia "Colheita 5" Ribiero Tinto 2017

90 Our Score
(5/2019) The brothers behind Cume do Avia have a story to match the rugged landscape of their vineyards in Ribeiro. After inheriting an abandoned farm from their grandparents, they set upon planting long-forgotten indigenous varietals and farming them organically and biodynamically. They took out loans to purchase equipment and after several years of learning and experimentation, 2017 is the first true vintage. Comprised of 40% Caino Longo, 26% Brancellao and 34% Souson, Colleita 5's rawness is balanced by its elegance. Aged in hundred-year-old chestnut barrels, this light-bodied 11%er greets you with flowery notes of wild strawberry, cranberry and green herbs. A quintessential refreshment at cellar temperature.

Envinate "Benje" Canary Islands Tinto 2017

91 Our Score
(11/2018) This is the 3rd bottling of Envinate's "Benje" Tinto. The vines are old gnarly, growing untrained high up in the mountains, as opposed to the more coastal influenced Taganans. This is made entirely from Listan Prieto, the long-lost cousin to the Pais grape. Mountains and volcanoes form the core framework of the wine, giving it high, snappy acid and a wonderfully deep mineral tone. All this is complemented by whiffs of smoke, salt and wild herbs. These four friends are making some of the most interesting wines to be found throughout Spain.

Can Sumoi Ancestral Montonega 2017

90 Our Score
(5/2019) Can Sumoi is the new label for natural wines from the superlative Cava producer Raventos I Blanc, whose aim is to produce wines from traditional Cava varietals that exhibit terroir without intervention. The Montonega (aka Parellada) is hand-picked, macerated for 4 hours with the skins, then partially fermented with native yeasts, leaving the fermentation to complete in the bottle. The result is a crisp, fizzy wine with bright notes of underripe apple flesh and white flowers, with a touch of salinity on the finish. Having mastered modern Cava winemaking, Raventos set its sights on ultra-traditional methods and they have nailed it!

92 James Suckling
(8/2/2018) "The complex white-peach, gooseberry and floral nose is very enticing and just beginning to open up. Rich, yet sleek and elegant with spot-on balance of fruit, creaminess from yeast contact and lemon-lime acidity. Where is that pan-fried fish! Drink now or hold."

Ameztoi Getariako Txakoli 2017

90 Our Score
(3/2018) Ameztoi is one of the top producers of this local specialty from the Basque region, near the northern coast of Spain. Pronounced CHOCK-OH-LEE, the wine is like high-voltage Vinho Verde with low alcohol content, bright limey-citrus fruit and soaring acidity. A salty tang and mineral undertone make this an ultra-friendly wine for seafood and lighter fare. While it's not your typical porch pounder, the wine goes down easier than most. Grab your porron along with a few bottles of this unique Spanish gem to enjoy this spring and summer!

90+ Our Score
(10/2018) Fans of Txakolina and other crisp, high mineral whites, we have a gem for you! This bottling from Bodega K5 is made from 100% Hondarrabi Zuri. While many wines from the region are bottled with a slight effervescence, this one is totally still. Morgadio Rias Baixas Albarino 2017

91 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
90 Our Score
(9/2018) The historic estate of Morgadio helped put the Albarino grape in the spotlight after their vineyards were used for experimentation that assisted in the creation of the Rias Baixas appellation in the early 1980s. If you're curious what a classic example of Albarino tastes like, this is it. During the winemaking process, the juice is macerated on the lees for two months, adding a rich and round texture that is characteristic of the region. That richness is balanced out by fresh acidity, deliciously pure fruit flavors of pear, peach and citrus zest, and a long, mineral-driven finish. Grab a chilled seafood platter and go to town!
