Poderi Aldo Conterno "Conca Tre Pile" Barbara d'Alba 2015

92+ Our Score
(12/2018) This single-site Barbera comes from the Conca Tre Pile, a hilly area located in the famous Barolo cru of Bussia-Soprana in Monforte d'Alba. The grapes are hand harvested from 45-year-old vines, vinified in stainless steel tanks and matured in French barrique for one year. The result is a full-bodied and full-flavored Barbera that is round and lively with excellent balance and a long finish. Dark red fruits are beautifully complemented by oak-driven baking spice and vanilla bean. Treat yourself to this classic Barbera from Aldo Conterno, one of Piedmont's greatest producers!

Ghiomo "Ruit Hora" Barbera d'Alba 2016

Released only in particuarly special vintages, the Ruit Hora is the masterpiece of Ghiomo - producer of THE longstanding Vin Chicago favorite Barbera. This is made from a vineyard selection of two rows of old vines, ripening about only one or two bunches per vine with the greatest sun exposure. 5% Nebbiolo is added for vivacity and further structure. This is a seriously powerful expression, seeing 14 months in barrique and weighing in at a healthy 15.5% alcohol. To see the full potential, we recommend five years in the cellar, and don't doubt this wine to see its 15th year in excellent health. After all, we just tasted the 2009 vintage of its baby brother "Lavai" Barbera d'Alba earlier this year which was singing!

93+ Our Score
(2/2018) Offering an amazing combination of flavor and structure, this bottling from siblings Dino, Diana and Gianni Bertolino is as good as Barbera gets. The aromas and flavors are incredibly pure, bright and dense, revealing layer after complex layer, including red fruit, fresh ground espresso, smoke, olive and a hint of barnyard. The taut acidity is perfectly woven into the gritty red earth finish, which seems to go on forever. So delicious now, and will be become even more beautiful over the next 5+ years.
