Olivier Cousin-Leduc "Pur Breton" Anjou Rouge 2017

Winemaker's Notes
"100% Cabernet Franc is hand-harvested, brought to the winery by a horse, destemmed and gently pressed. Only natural yeasts are used and the juice undergoes an extended maceration. Aged in old oak barrels. Ripe plum, juicy cherry, red apple core and chalk tones dominate the nose. Crushed strawberries mixed with invigoratingly fresh Bing cherry and red apple flavors explode on the palate."

La Niverdiere "Resilience" Chinon Rouge 2016

94 Our Score
(3/2019) For a pure expression of red wine sourced from limestone soils, you have to check out this stunning single site Cabernet Franc from a tiny grower in Chinon, selected by the talented Thomas Calder. This beauty is dense, layered with black and red fruits, black pepper, bell pepper and chalky, white rock minerality. The wine will benefit from an additional 3-4 years of age but will drink quite nicely now. Just lovely.

Gamling & McDuck "Pickberry Vineyard" Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Franc 2014

$38 at the Winery! A great example of this "New Californian Wine" you've been hearing about!
91 Our Score
(9/2018) What an exciting and energetic bottle! Sometimes Cabernet Franc in California can lose its varietal identity, when grown in too warm of an area, picked on the ripe side. This is not the case with Gamling & McDuck's single-vineyard offering. This showcases all of our favorite elements of natural wine, with tension and lift in the palate. The wine bursts with ripe black plum, black cherry, violet and tobacco. The value for a bottle of this caliber sourced from a single site of 30 year old vines on Sonoma Mountain is unbelievable.

Halcyon California Cabernet Franc 2016

91 Our Score
(9/2018) This is the first vintage of this new wine from Cali Cab Franc Cult producer Halcyon. Entirely comprised of Cabernet Franc, this is a blend from two sites - 60% Paso Robles and 40% Contra Costa County. Beautifully expressive, this toes a fine line between a classic Loire styled Cab Franc and its more robust sun-kissed New World compatriots. Pretty tart red fruits are bolstered by classic notes of herbs and green peppers, with a nice spine of minerality. Halycon has only been around for a few vintages, but they are putting out some of the best Cab Franc in all of California.

Olivier Cousin-Leduc "Pur Breton" Anjou Rouge 2016

91 Our Score
(6/2018) (6/2018) Now in semi-retirement, Olivier Cousin chooses only to work with "Breton" (Cabernet Franc), of which he produces some of the best natural wines available. Farmed biodynamically from 40-year-old vines, vinified with indigenous yeast and without added sulphites, his "Pur Breton" is worthy of its namesake. Bright and ripe over a layer of earth, this medium-bodied wine is loaded with plum, cherry and chalk on the nose with the addition of fresh red berries on the palate. As both an example of Anjou Cab Franc and natural winemaking, "Pur Breton" is essential. Drink now through 2023.

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge 2017

Winemaker's Notes
"Pruning method is Guyau Val de Loire. Vineyards are planted with a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. The maximum yield is 40-50 hL per hectare. 3 parcels with silt and sand topsoils covering softer limestone bedrock. 100% de-stemmed, maceration, indigenous yeast alcoholic fermentation, and 6 months' aging in tank."

Van Loggerenberg "Breton" Stellenbosch Cabernet Franc 2017

New low price! Original Vin Chicago retail - $27.99
92 Our Score
92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(8/2018) "The 2017 Breton (whose name is inspired by the Loire) comes from two vineyards in the Polkerdrei (100% whole-bunch-fermented) and from the foothills of the Helderberg, matured in third-fill oak barrels. It has a fresh, vibrant bouquet that really articulates the Cabernet Franc in a Chinon style. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin and a little reserved and austere at first, opening with classic bell-pepper-tinged Cabernet Franc fruit and closing with a touch of cracked black pepper on the finish. Excellent."

Roark Wine Company Santa Barbara County Cabernet Franc 2017

Typical retail for this delicious Santa Barbara County Cab Franc is $31. Our price is over 22% less!
91+ Our Score
(8/2019) It's been a while since we've featured a domestic Cabernet Franc, mostly because there aren't too many we come across that really knock our socks off. This beauty from Roark is a big-time winner. Checking in at just 13.7% ABV, this well-balanced and easy-drinking red is full of delicious ripe fruit including red and black cherries, blackberry, raspberry and blueberry. The oak aging makes for a round texture and adds subtle baking spices, while a whiff of green herbs and bell pepper linger behind the scenes. This is a stunning wine at our special low price, and can easily fool someone for a wine that costs twice as much!

Domaine Chancelle Saumur-Champigny 2015

90 Our Score
91 Wine & Spirits
(4/2017) "This is a lovely cabernet franc, the blue tinge showing some reduction, as does the initial, natural wine scent of wild blackberries and bear scat. The wild berry fruit wins out in the end, the funk disappearing with air. The fragrance develops into red plum and mulberries, the grit of the tannins making this a mouthwatering red to serve with a lemon-pepper-rubbed filet mignon."
