(12/2019) "The 2012 Cristal is another absolutely stellar wine this flight of recent releases. Rich, vinous and beautifully textured, the 2012 has been nothing short of magnificent on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. In the glass, the 2012 is radiant and luscious, yet it possesses remarkable transparency and striking aromatic depth. Light tropical notes develop in the glass, giving the 2012 a real feeling of exotic beauty. The 2012 is the first vintage of Cristal done with 100% organically-farmed fruit, an approach introduced gradually starting with the 2007 that has profoundly changes Cristal, especially in its aromatic breadth. Two thousand twelve is the vintage where endless trials and experiments in farming and winemaking are fully realized. The 2012 is just stunning. It's as simple as that. Dosage is just over 7 grams per liter, the lowest it has even been for Cristal."

(4/30/2019) Making its debut this year is Krug's NV Grande Cuvee 167eme Edition, a beautiful wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of yellow orchard fruit, peach and waxy citrus rind, complemented by complex notes of freshly baked bread, walnuts and smoke. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and muscular but incisive, with a deep and concentrated core, a pinpoint mousse and a long, complex finish. Built around the 2011 vintage, the wine includes reserve wines dating back to 1995 and was disgorged in the winter of 2017-2018. Readers are advised to give it at least a couple years of bottle age before popping corks. Drink 2020 - 2045."

Needing plenty of air to show at its best, this beauty has a wonderful mid-palate, a racy mousse, and the balance and class to cruise for over two decades in cool cellars."

(1/2018) This wonderfully unique and significant bottling hails entirely from the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims - known for its powerful fruit. Scarcely have we experienced as ripe and supple of a Champagne, the mindbender here being that the cuvee is composed primarily (70%) of wine from a perpetual reserve solera with vintages dating back to 1983. 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir. Ripeness is the key word in understanding this immediately delicious, but layered experience. Ripe green and red apples are highlighted by laser-like candied lemon, with a strong undercurrent of fine chalkiness all the while. There's a balance of length, power and finesse that goes beyond description. If there can be at once a connoisseur's Champagne that is at the same time a sumptuous, hedonist's Champagne (a category that is painfully fleeting), this is the one. Hard to resist but cellar for complexity, this is shockingly youthful and primary for a wine with so much reserve stock.

Vilmart "Grand Cellier d'Or" Premier Cru Brut Champagne 2013
Importer Theise says of Vilmart's wines, which are arguably some of the greatest in all of Champagne, "This estate has undergone a subtle but profound ascension from the earthbound to the celestial." And he goes on to say, "I wonder if a year from now we'll be talking about '13 the way we did about 2008 a few years ago. Because this is looking more and more like magic. This wine is lively and gushes the fragrance of mirabelles, with its typical sandalwood aromas arriving on the mid-palate and into the finish. Classy, buoyant, almost comically long."

"Sous les Roses is a coveted site in the winery's home village of Courmas which has shallow soils rich in calcareous-clay, a perfectly suited terroir for the expression of Blanc de Noirs. The wine is composed of 60% pinot noir and 40% pinot meunier, fermented and aged 3 months in oak barrels before it spends an additional 3-4 months in stainless and 5 years en tirage with natural cork."

Blending 55% Pinot Noir with 45% Chardonnay, all grown in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, this bone-dry bubbly is stunningly rich and beautiful, packed with ageworth red fruits, earth and intense minerality. One of the top 3 or 4 Champagnes we've tasted in 2020. Disgorged 12/2019.
