Domaine Jean Masson "Vieilles Vignes" Apremont Vin de Savoie 2018

91+ Our Score
(8/2019) A 10th generation vigneron, Jean-Clause Masson crafts this alpine white from very old Jacquere vines located in a cool, high elevation vineyard with large diurnal shifts. This overachiever offers a weightier mouthfeel than you would imagine given its mountainous origin and refreshingly mild 12% ABV. With a yeasty, textural intensity owed to sur-lie aging techniques, there is a huge payoff here for fans of mineral-driven wines like Muscadet, Chablis, Assyrtiko or Etna Bianco. Ethereal in nature, it offers precise notes of crisp apple, quince, white florals and salinity, all complemented by a tropical twist of banana skin. Finishing long and clean, this is an old-world delight!

Domaine Labbe Abymes Vin de Savoie 2018

89+ Our Score
(5/2019) This wine simply screams for a warm day on the patio! The Savoie region of eastern France sits right on the Swiss border. It is better known for skiing and cheese than it is for wine, but that should not be the case, as the wines here are fun and tasty as well as dense and impressive. This crisply textured, bone dry bottling comes from Abymes and is made entirely from the Jacquere grape. While only 11% ABV, the wine feels weighty and presents salted, mineral-laden apple and lemon flavors along with a long finish that expands with oxygen. A very cool white that packs more than the first few sips suggest.
