Fuentes del Silencio "Las Quintas'" Castilla y Leon Mencia 2016

93+ Our Score
(12/2018) Ted Vance is the owner of The Source Imports. He perfectly illustrates why their newest Spanish producer is truly something special. "Las Quintas is a blend of 85% Mencia, 13% Alicante Bouschet and 2% Palomino. The vineyard soils are composed primarily of sand and silt. With the influence of Mount Teleno, this vineyard area within the Jamuz Valley has the largest diurnal change between night and day. The soil, icy nighttime temperatures, high acidity and 100% stem inclusion during its forty-five day fermentation renders a bright, tense wine that gushes with wild red fruit, compelling textures and loads of charm and pleasure. This is the most sensual wine in the range from the moment the cork is pulled and, like Las Jaras, it doesn't let up for hours into the next day."

Descendientes des Palacios "Villa de Corullon" Bierzo 2015

94 James Suckling
95 Wine Advocate
(8/31/2017) "Ricardo Pérez Palacios told me his favorite overall vintages for Bierzo are 2001, 2012 and possibly 2015, because he sees them as very complete years, even if 2015 didn't have as perfect conditions as 2001 and 2012; the 2015 Corullón is a perfect example of that, a really pretty wine, open, where I see the similarities with 2012. They use many of the vineyards year after year, all of them around the village of Corullón, all planted with a field blend of varieties, and they have been increasing the percentage of white grapes from those vines that they include in the cuvée. In 2015, it can be almost 9%, mostly Palomino, and they feel it polishes that slight bitterness in the finish of the Mencía, reminiscent of green almonds. Of course, there are also other red grapes, like Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda, that might contribute to some 2% of the volume. 19,572 bottles, 720 half bottles, 450 magnums, 45 double magnums and 30 Jeroboams were filled between May 11th and 17th of 2017."

Bodegas and Vinedos Raul Perez La Vizcaina "La Vitoriana" Bierzo 2016

96 Wine Advocate
(2/28/2019) "The vines at La Vitoriana are from a north-facing part of the vineyard and are extremely old, and the grapes show their best between 13% and 13.5% alcohol. The maceration of the 2016 La Vizcaina La Vitoriana is the longest of all wines from La Vizcaina wines, and it always has very strong balsamic notes. It's subtle and elegant with a velvety texture, with lots of energy and inner strength. Perez selects about half of the vineyard, and he feels 2016 is the year that best represents the character of the place. I'd add it's probably the best vintage so far. 3,000 bottles produced. Drink 2019 - 2026."

Fuentes del Silencio "Las Jaras'" Castilla y Leon Mencia 2016

91+ Our Score
(12/2018) Ted Vance is the owner of The Source Imports. He perfectly illustrates why their newest Spanish producer is truly something special. "A blend of Prieto Picudo, Mencia and Alicante Bouschet, Las Jaras comes from vineyards located at the south of the Jamuz Valley. The soils are colder in this area with a higher content of iron and clay. The grapes were co-fermented over thirty-five days with native yeasts and 75% of its stems in large vertical French oak fermenters. After pressing, the wine is put back into the same large oak vat for nine months of aging. This is a wine of tension, vertical structure, texture and freshness imparted by its cold soils and the strong diurnal shift between day and nighttime temperatures. Once the cork is pulled the wine's frequency rings at a high tone and finds its footing within fifteen minutes and begins its vertical climb, which carries on with almost more strength into its second day."

Bodegas and Vinedos Raul Perez "Ultreia" Bierzo Mencia 2015

This gritty and pure Spanish red is a wonderful example of the beauty of the Bierzo region. If you're a fan of classic Pinot Noir, Beaujolais or even Barolo then there's a good chance you'll appreciate what makes this wine so special!

(8/2018) "Raul Perez crafted this red from a parcel planted mainly to mencia, with some bastardo, garnacha tintorera, dona blanca and palomino in the mix as well. This unusual field blend offers some unusual flavors, with the iodine notes of raw meat and lots of black-pepper spice to the ripe fruit. It tastes like its target is roast suckling pig."
