(8/2020) "The 2018, Doug Margerum's Grenache-based blend, is fabulous. A burst of sweet berry fruit and floral notes give this racy red so much immediacy, not to mention incredible appeal. Medium in body, with no hard edges and terrific purity of expression, M5 is a winner."

Donkey & Goat "The Gallivanter" North Coast Red Blend 2018
An awesome and sustainable winery at the forefront of the natural wine movement!
90
Our Score
(11/2020) A staple of Donkey and Goat's portfolio, the Gallivanter is sourced from a rotating roster of organic and sustainably farmed vineyards each year with the same goal in mind - red, well-priced and delicious! The 2018 blends Pinot Noir, Grenache, Mourvedre, Merlot and Syrah, spontaneously fermented in old oak, and bottled without fining or filtration. Medium-bodied with grippy tannins, the Gallivanter is fresh and juicy, with generous flavors of black cherry and pomegranate, complemented by notes of crushed violet. This tasty fruit-forward red matches and casual approachability with structure and depth.

Koppitsch "Ret" Burgenland Red Blend 2018
90+
Our Score
(7/2020) Alexander and Maria Koppitsch's Ret is a blend of Zweigelt and St. Laurent harvested from gravelly soils off the shores of the Neusidl lake. The grapes are pressed as whole bunches and raised in steel tanks and acacia barrels for 14 months on the lees to maintain the resultant wine's fruity character. And it works - the wine is generously juicy with loads of macerated cherries and blackberries framed by notes of dried herbs and a sprinkling of cracked black pepper. Ret is versatile and universally drinkable, but best wielded like a secret weapon while grilling.

Daou "Pessimist" Paso Robles Red 2018

Wine Advocate
(1/31/2020) "The 2018 Pessimist is a barrel sample blend of 62% Petite Sirah, 19% Zinfandel, 17% Syrah and 2% Lagrein. It is expected to age for 11 months in 50% new French oak. Opaque ruby-purple, it offers up tar, chargrill, turned black earth and blackcurrants with wafts of blackcurrant bud, dark chocolate, smoked meats and crushed red cherries. The medium to full-bodied palate has lifted flavor layers, a firm, grainy frame and long, spicy, fresh finish."
