Herman Story Wines "Bolt Cutter" California Red 2015

93 Our Score
(12/2017) We really dig the big flavors of Herman Story wines and wish he made more Cabernet-based wines like this "Bolt Cutter" blend of 42% Cabernet, 32% Petit Verdot and 26% Syrah - sourced from some pretty famous vineyards, including Shadow Canyon and White Hawk. We could tell you all about the powerful mouthfeel and the super dense fruit flavors, but these notes from proprietor Russell P. From if more intriguing than anything we could ever write... "If Merle Haggard and Neil Young had ever released that metal record it would be playing on this train as it blew through the California deserts, carrying it's payload of blackberrycola sorbet on a quest for the coast: granite talus, smoked black cherry, flame kissed gingerbread village, crispy blueberry sage handpie, road tar, perfect powerchords and lightning struck oxen." We're not exactly sure what that means, but the wine is really freaking delicious. Drink now and over the next 4-5 years. For best results, decant an hour or two prior to serving.

Desparada "Sackcloth & Ashes" California Proprietary Red 2015

93 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
93 Jeb Dunnuck
(8/10/2017) "A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2015 Sackcloth and Ashes is a straight up delicious red that's loaded with notions of cassis, incense, peppery herbs and hints of lead pencil. Medium to full-bodied, polished, elegant and with tons of fruit, drink this sexy, yet elegant 2015 over the coming 7-8 years."

Shafer "TD-9" Napa Valley Red Blend 2016

94 Wine Advocate
(10/29/2018) "The 2016 Red Blend TD-9 is blended of 58% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Malbec. It has a very deep purple-black color and displays ready-for-biz, fragrant scents of warm plums, Black Forest cake and blueberry compote with touches of baking spices, bay leaves and potpourri. Full-bodied with a serious, firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins, the palate delivery loads of black fruit and spicy layers with bags of vivacity and panache. Drink 2019 -2044."

Lewis "Alec's Blend" Napa Valley Red 2016

93 Wine Spectator
94 Jeb Dunnuck
(1/31/2019) "The 2016 Alec's Blend checks in as a blend of 61% Syrah, 38% Merlot, and the rest Petite Sirah. This deep ruby/purple-colored effort shines on all accounts and offers classy notes of blueberries, ripe black cherries, white flowers, graphite, and flowery, peppery spice. It's medium to full-bodied, has beautiful richness and depth, yet stays lively, pure, and light on its feet. It's a beautiful wine."

94 Wine Advocate
(12/2015) "The 2013 Proprietary Red Mad Hatter, 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot, is a big-time winner. It has a gorgeously deep ruby/purple color, a sweet kiss of licorice, blackcurrants, black cherries, camphor and incense. The wine is fragrant, with supple tannins, an opulent lushness and a total hedonistic and intellectual turn-on. Drink it over the next 10-12 years."

Benedicte and Stephane Tissot "DD" Arbois Rouge 2017

92 Our Score
(11/2018) Natural wine done right! Tissot is a certified biodynamic grower in the Jura region of eastern France. They are one of our favorite producers of French sparkling wine outside of the Champagne region and they also make delicious still wines, including this blend of 1/3 each Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Trousseau. Boasting beautifully pure fruit and floral notes along with incredible energy and lift, the "DD" is bottled without the addition of any sulfur dioxide and as such is not for long-term aging. Drink young, as the wine is fresh, alive and delicious right now. This super cool nerdy wine would be brilliant with turkey, ham, duck or lamb!

Occhipinti "SP68" Terre Siciliane Nero D'Avola/Frapatto 2016

93 James Suckling
93 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(9/2017) "Dark ruby. Archetypal Frappato aromas that are pungently floral and bright, complicated by hints of dried herbs and spicy red berries. Then fresh, bright and lovely, with blackberry, raspberry and delicate herb flavors that are very complex and multilayered. Finishes long, mineral and juicy. Arianna Occhipinti has the Frappato variety nailed down and rarely makes anything but a great wine with it, so this blend comes up aces, offering a ton of flavor and only 12.5% alcohol."

Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta "Le Petit Clos" Colchagua Red Blend 2014

93 James Suckling
93 Wine & Spirits
(6/2017) "Petit Clos is the new younger brother of the classic carmenere-based Clos Apalta, a second selection of the estate's old vineyards in El Condor de Apalta, where some of the vines are almost 100 years old. This blend is 30 percent carmenere, while Clos is more than 70 percent. The balance of Petit is cabernet sauvignon (40 percent), merlot, as well as some petit verdot from younger vines. Dark cherry and dark, bitter chocolate lend a savory note to balance the lovely, sweet notes of blackberry in this wine, which is tighter, more focused and narrower than its big brother. It is fresher, too, but with a similar depth of flavor coming from these venerable old vines."

Kanonkop Estate "Paul Sauer" Simonsberg-Stellenbosch Red Blend 2014

Kanonkop's "Paul Sauer" is one of South Africa's top wines. With one foot in Napa and one in Bordeaux, this classy Cab-based blend is complex and delicious!
93 Vinous, Neal Martin
93 Wine Enthusiast
(9/1/2017) "Winemaker: Abrie Beeslaar. Always a stunner, in both regular release as well as the CWG form, Kanonkop's Paul Sauer Bordeaux-style blend is bold and concentrated, with tremendous potential for long-term aging. Made from 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it's brimming with notes of cassis, licorice root and black-fruit preserves, all buoyed by ample acidity and a pronounced mentholated-herb lift. Bittersweet cocoa, char and chicory unfold on the back of the black fruit-skin fueled finish. Robust, full and firm, drink 2020-2026."

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia "Le Serre Nuove" Bolgheri 2014

91 James Suckling
90 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "The 2014 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove is a lush and well measured red wine that does not shy back in terms of intensity. Neither does it overachieve in that department. This blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot marches to a steady pace with good fruit definition followed by spice, leather and fresh tobacco leaf. The wine does flaunt its youth and charm. There is a touch of tannic tightness or sourness on the close that should relax within a year or two."
