Swerwer Western Cape Red Blend 2017

90 Our Score
(2/2019) This non-interventionist wine is crafted from old, low-yielding vineyards planted to Cinsault, Grenache and Tinta Barocca. The wine is 100% whole-cluster, fermentation is spontaneous with the wine brought-up for 12 months in neutral French oak. Despite the hot climate origins, this wine is decidedly energetic. Delicate floral notes lift a compact, cherry-fruited palate with good grit and structure from the unique Portuguese variety. A different kind of barbecue wine that has a wide swath of appeal!

Mount Abora "The Abyssinian" Swartland Red Blend 2014

88+ Our Score
(4/2019) Mount Abora is a natural wine producer in the dry and hot region of Swartland in South Africa. The Abyssinian is a blend of 35% Mourvedre, 28% Syrah, 28% Grenache and 9% Cinsault made from hand-harvested grapes off of old bush vines. After natural fermentation with native yeasts, the wine was matured separately in seasoned (neutral) 300 liter French oak barrels for 12 months. The wine has the rugged and bold flavors and spices of a Crozes-Hermitage from the Rhone crossed with the body, finesse and softness of a Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Chill it down, throw it in a decanter if you got it, and drink. This will pair up with nearly anything, but especially with roasted poultry dishes.

Creation "Whale Pod Spyhopping" Cape South Coast Red 2016

89 Our Score
(7/2018) One of our favorite small importer/ distributors focuses exclusively on South African wines. They came to us with a supply of this tasty red which had been bound for a restaurant chain in Washington DC. The chain was sold, the deal went south and, as a result, we were presented a VERY special price. Drinking like a crossing of a Rhône and a Washington State red blend, this enticing combination of 60% Syrah, 20% Merlot and 20% Petite Verdot is pretty darn impressive. Fire up the grill and don't tell your friends this isn't more expensive! (South Africa)
