(7/2019) "The 2008 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is fabulous. Rich, deep and exotically beautiful, the 2008 has so much to offer. Ten years in small casks yielded a Vin Santo loaded with personality, complexity and character. Orange confit, burnt sugar, dried herbs, spice and caramel are some of the many notes that lift out of the glass. A touch of Petit Manseng (unusual in Vin Santo) helps brighten the acids. If I had to pick only one bottle to demonstrate what Vin Santo is all about, it might very well be Isole e Olena's 2008, as it is a real reference-point of both excellence and pedigree. Drinking window: 2020 - 2035."

It opens with hints of honeycomb, orange peel and white blossom with sliced green pear and green apple notes at the core plus a hint of wet stone. Light to medium-bodied, it has pure citrus and tree fruit flavors in the mouth with floral and yeasty notes, finishing with juicy acidity and some phenolic texture. 1,300 cases produced."

Oriol Artigas "La Canya" VdT Alella White Blend 2018

(8/2020) Oriol Artigas has been making wine in the Alella DO just north of Barcelona since 2011, and has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting producers in the region. "La Canya" is 80% Garnatxa Blanca and 20% Godello co-fermented with wild yeasts in stainless steel seeing two days of skin contact followed by six months on lees before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deliciously supple and fresh, with a fine balance of fruit and marine-mineral qualities, aromas and flavors of green apple, papaya and pineapple abound, framed by wisps of sea breeze and limestone. Open this with flaky white fish and grilled vegetables and you will have done a very kind thing for yourself.
