(10/31/2018) This has been an impressive Saturday morning chez Jean Boxler, and I am blown away by the quality of his 2016 Rieslings. From a southeast-facing plot at 250-290 meters in altitude with 70+-year-old vines on granite over Muschelkalk (triassic limestone) soils, the 2016 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg Dudenstein opens with a greatly refined and aromatic bouquet of pineapples spiced with granite powder and smoked figs and plums. Generous and highly elegant, the palate is pure, refined and lush, with lovely bitters on the long and even somewhat astringent finish. Round and fruity in the aftertaste, this is a well-concentrated and perfectly ripe Dudenstein and another great wine that will improve over the years. Drink Date: 2018 - 2040.
