What Critics Think

(6/13/2024) The harmonious and fresh 2021 Pepe Yllera, their fastest-selling red, comes from a vintage when the Cabernet Sauvignon ripened thoroughly, and they used 10% of it in the blend with 4% Merlot and the majority of Tempranillo. It reached 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.7 and 5.27 grams of acidity. It has very integrated oak (they are using more and more 500-liter barrels) and is approachable, aromatic and juicy, medium-bodied, very tasty, fresh, elegant, balanced and serious. This is now produced at the Vivaltus winery with a similar philosophy and grapes, with part of the élevage in tinaja and concrete egg. Amazing value. 170,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023. Drink Date: 2023 - 2028.

(6/2025) The 2021 Pepe Yllera is 90% Tempranillo, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot from Ribera del Duero. Direct fruit expression leads with cherry and plum over a backdrop of pronounced oak. Pure fruit. On the palate, a touch of reactive tannins joins a juicy flow. The finish is marked by attractive fruit notes. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2035.

(8/14/2024) A juicy, drinkable Ribera del Duero that shows some herbs, red cherries and plummy fruit. Subtle spices as well. Not complex but quite well-balanced with medium body and adequate tannins. Drink now.
