What Critics Think

James Suckling : 96 Points

(1/18/2019) This has attractive, glossy, ripe red-plum and licorice aromas with cedar, flowers and red berries, as well as a stony edge. A very fragrant, cabernet-driven nose. The palate has elegance and grace with sleek and charming, balanced style and a discreet tannin structure that holds the finish long and fresh. A blend of 81 percent cabernet sauvignon and 19 percent merlot. Try from 2023.

Vinous - Neal Martin : 95 Points

(5/2026) A bottle of 2016 Giscours was dispatched from the château after a bottle misfired at the Southwold tasting. This example correlates to initial showings. Vivid blackberry and blueberry fruit soar on the nose after an hour's decanting, beautifully defined with a patina of new oak discreetly interwoven. The palate oozes panache, very well defined with lace-like tannins, gentle grip and just a touch of graininess towards the finish such that it does not come across "over-polished." Afford it another couple of years in bottle if you can. Drinking Window: 2028 - 2055.

Wine Enthusiast : 96 Points

(5/1/2019) This nearly 200-acre estate lies in the south of the Margaux appellation. The wine is another great success in a series of superb years. It is rich but the structure and finely textured fruit give it style and longevity. Drink the wine from 2026.

Decanter : 94 Points

(4/2/2017) Giscours has been hitting it out of the park for a number of vintages now, and we are squarely back in this territory for the 2016. Firm tannins, among the biggest in the appellation, but not overdone because of a vibrant, flexible quality to these essential elements of structure. The sheer volume of bilberry and cassis fruits on the full, dark palate show that clearly the anthocyanin and IPT counts are right up there. This is complex, layered and well held together. Drinking Window: 2027 - 2050.
