How often do you get to buy a 10 year old Californian Barbera? Go against the grain! $28 at the winery!
89 Our Score (8/2019) Barbera is one of the Italian varieties that has had some success in California. Even in its homeland of Piemonte, in northwestern Italy, recent movements have seen producers seeking higher levels of ripness. Barbera is blessed with extremely high acidity, and only by reaching higher degrees of ripeness and alcohol does that balance. In sunny California this is incredibly helpful and you have seen it offering freshness and counterbalance in big blends for some time. Bill Easton likens this wine to those modern, barrique-aged wines from Italy. He is also a mad-man, who else would hold a Californian Barbera for 6 years in the winery before even considering releasing it? It works! Beautiful fresh looking in the glass, the profile is quite spicy. Spiced berries, green herb, cinnamon, tobacco and vanilla are predominant notes, and the whole package is rather integrated at this point, with a savory quality and notably long finish. A delightful food wine that will handle all proteins and would love tomatoes as well.
