98 James Suckling (12/1/2020) "Breathtaking complexity, thanks to an entire spectrum of fruit aromas (from apple to exotic fruit and a slew of berries), plus an entire microcosm of herbal and mineral notes! And the balance of racy acidity with all this and the merest hint of perceptible grape sweetness is like a lightning strike on a mountain top. Drink or hold."
95+ John Gilman (7/1/2020) The 2019 Domprobst Spatlese AP #5 from the Schaefer family is a touch richer in personality than the AP #10 from the same vineyard, but not with retaining the same beautiful filigree of classic Spatlese. The bouquet is deep, precise and quite expressive for a young Domprobst, wafting from the glass in a blend of pear, fresh apricot, orange blossoms, slate, incipient notes of honeycomb, violets and a topnote of lime zest. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish, complex and perfectly balanced, with bright acids, lovely focus and bounce and a long, refined and juicy finish. This is another gorgeous Spatlese. It is as approachable out of the blocks as the Himmelreich Spatlese, but given this terroir's propensity to close down for long aging, I have to believe that this is a brief window of accessibility before it settles in for a bit of hibernation before really starting to stretch its wings. So try it over the next year, or bury it for another six or seven years before starting to drink it in earnest. Drink between 2020-2070.
95 Mosel Fine Wines (6/1/2020) "The 2019 he 2019er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese AP 05 was made essentially from grapes harvested in the Fergert sector of the vineyard, and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It proves beautifully restrained and reveals a greatly fresh, pure, and wonderfully floral nose vineyards peach, pear, candied grapefruit, anise, herbs, spices, and tangerine. The wine develops some gorgeous fruity presence underpinned by ripe yet refined yellow fruits on the palate, and leaves a sense of smooth delicacy in the hugely long and intense finish. There is still a feel of intense and Auslese-styled sweetness, but the acidity comes through in the after-taste to add spices and cut. This truly remarkable wine only needs some patience in order to fully shine. Maturity: 2032-2054."
95 Wine Advocate (8/13/2020) "The 2019 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese #5 is clear and coolish on the flinty nose that represents perfectly ripe and precise fruit with some minty notes. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a pure, tight, refreshing, stimulatingly piquant and salty and finessed Spatlese with a lot of grip and expression. Drink Date: 2020 - 2060."
