What's different about Vin Chicago? First of all, we're not about safe choices. We don’t care about hot sellers. We look for the special wines, the ones scoring highest in the wine press and the ones we discover on our own, that we can get for a great price. We taste—and rate for ourselves— virtually everything we put on our shelves. Why? Because we want you to love the wine you buy from us. And come back for more.

L'Aventure "Estate Cuvee" Paso Robles Red Blend 2016

99 Jeb Dunnuck
(11/29/2018) "A wine that flirts with perfection is the 2016 Estate Cuvee, which is 52% Syrah, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Petit Verdot, all of which spent 15 months in new French oak. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a masculine bouquet of creme de cassis, graphite, liquid rock-like minerality, and lead pencil shavings, it reminds me of a top 2010 Pomerol with its opulence, power, and purity. Hitting the palate with full body, a layered, seamless, multi-dimensional texture, and present yet polished tannins, this beauty is one of the finest examples of this cuvee yet produced. Give bottles 2-3 years and it will keep for 15+."

Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2015

96+ Wine Advocate

97+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2018) "Proprietor Alfred Tesseron and winemaker Jean-Michel Comme produced an absolutely stellar Pontet-Canet in 2015. Sumptuous, racy and totally inviting, the 2015 is all class. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice and exotic floral notes build as the 2015 shows off its alluring personality. Even with all of its raciness, the 2015 speaks with authority and power. Fine tannins extend the persistent, highly nuanced finish. The 2015 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot aged 50% new oak, 4% in terra cotta and 15% in neutral oak. Tasted three times. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2040."

Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2014

95 Wine Spectator
93-95 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(12/2015) "Brilliant purple. Powerful, mineral-tinged cherry and blackberry scents, along with notes of bacon fat, licorice, potpourri and pungent flowers. Pure, concentrated and energetic on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black and blue fruit flavors that gain weight and become sweeter with air. Closes extremely long, sappy and sweet, juicy acidity adding lift and cut to the blue-fruit-dominated, youthfully tannic finish."

Herman Story Wines "Bolt Cutter" California Red 2015

93 Our Score
(12/2017) We really dig the big flavors of Herman Story wines and wish he made more Cabernet-based wines like this "Bolt Cutter" blend of 42% Cabernet, 32% Petit Verdot and 26% Syrah - sourced from some pretty famous vineyards, including Shadow Canyon and White Hawk. We could tell you all about the powerful mouthfeel and the super dense fruit flavors, but these notes from proprietor Russell P. From if more intriguing than anything we could ever write... "If Merle Haggard and Neil Young had ever released that metal record it would be playing on this train as it blew through the California deserts, carrying it's payload of blackberrycola sorbet on a quest for the coast: granite talus, smoked black cherry, flame kissed gingerbread village, crispy blueberry sage handpie, road tar, perfect powerchords and lightning struck oxen." We're not exactly sure what that means, but the wine is really freaking delicious. Drink now and over the next 4-5 years. For best results, decant an hour or two prior to serving.

(10/29/2018) "One-hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon from 27-year-old vines, aged for 19 months in 100% new French oak, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon A. Price is very deep purple-black in color and features vibrant creme de cassis, warm plums, blueberry pie and dark chocolate notes with hints of menthol, rose hip tea, yeast extract and lavender. Phillip Togni Spring Mountain Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

94+ Wine Advocate
98 Decanter
97 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(10/2016) "Togni's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is quite dark and powerful, but also very much medium in body. Graphite, smoke, savory herbs, mint, leather and a core of inky dark red and purplish fruit infuse this deep, beautifully layered Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 is a wine built on energy and aromatics that won't hit its stride until at least age ten. Drinking window: 2024 - 2039."

La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

95 Wine Advocate
95 Wine Enthusiast
96+ Jeb Dunnuck
(12/29/2017) "Checking in as a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is another gorgeous wine from winemaker Chris Carpenter. Brought up in 90% new French oak, this classic, tight, focused beauty boasts sensational notes of crème de cassis, graphite, toasty oak, and ample minerality. These all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered, tannic 2014 that has remarkable purity, impeccable balance, and a great, great finish. It's classic, old-school, yet awesome Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that needs 3-4 years of bottle age and will keep for 2-3 decades."

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemaker's Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."
