2021 Carpineta Fontalpino “Fontalpino”
Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~
Just when you started to think that the days of great Chianti Classico under twenty bucks were gone, up pops this old-school gem from the Cresti family!
The 2021 harvest in Chianti is being lauded as the best in modern history. Speaking to the greatness of the vintage, the 2021 Fontalpino leads with enticingly traditional aromas of red berries, crumbled limestone, red rock earth, sweet dried herbs, olive and cured meat. In the mouth, a chewy, silky, rustic texture and flavors of tart cherry, lavender, wildflowers and spice tell you loud and clear that you have Chianti Classico in your glass.
Awarding scores of 92 and 93 points, Wine Advocate, James Suckling and Jeb Dunnuck love this too...
“The organic 2021 Chianti Classico Fontalpino is 100% Sangiovese that starts off in neutral cement and stainless steel and finishes in tonneaux for 12 months of aging. Fruit is sourced from across three sites, totaling 20 hectares of vines, with sandy and loamy limestone-based soils in warm Castelnuovo Berardenga. This is a terrific value bottle with dark cherry and fruit that is amply framed by earthy sensations and a hint of toasted nut. This release of 40,000 bottles will hit the market in winter 2023. Drink Date: 2023 - 2028.”
- 92 Points, Wine Advocate (9/21/2023)
“Very pretty Chianti Classico with orange blossom, cherry and mineral aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Linear and energetic. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”
- 93 Points, James Suckling (7/28/2023)
“Coming from the southeastern region of Castelnuova Berrardenga and pouring a nearly opaque red hue, the 2021 Chianti Classico Fontalpino is lush and inviting with a saturated perfume of black cherry liqueur, sunny Mediterranean herbs, mossy earth, and mocha. Full-bodied with ripe, silky tannins, it retains good freshness while retaining a rounded profile and has a savory finish with notes of tea leaf. It’s a very attractive and ripe wine with lots of complexity and depth that’s going to do well over the coming 8-10 years. Maturity: 2024 - 2034.”
- 92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (1/25/2024)
From an Hour Northwest of Venice Comes a Delicious Italian White!
2023 Maculan "Pino & Toi" Bianco
Veneto, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~
This delicious Italian white has been featured in our stores for over 20 years and, amazingly, it's still under $15! Hailing from the rolling hills of Breganze, a bucolic wine zone located equidistant from Verona and Venice, “Pinot & Toi” is produced by the Maculan family.
Packed in a clear bottle, the medium straw/yellow color suggests a wine of flavor, which is exactly what you find with this blend of Friulano (aka “Toi”, 60%), Pinot Bianco (25%) and Pinot Grigio (15%). Look for baked orchard fruit, salty minerality, and a fleshy, taut, zippy mouth presence.
Drinking a little like Pinot Grigio and a little like Soave, this sneaky-awesome wine is packed with pleasure and character. Zippy and yummy, it could, and should, be your new house white. Only three online listings. Our price beats them all!
