2020 Damilano "Lecinquevigne" Barolo
Piedmont, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With enviable holdings in some of the most revered crus in all of Piedmont, the Damilano brothers are highly respected producers in Barolo. Sourced from these five famed sites: Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi, and Raviole, "Lecinquevigne" (the five vineyards) is their core bottling.
This 100% estate-grown Nebbiolo is fermented traditionally and raised in classic large barrels. In the glass, it shows a medium-deep ruby with light streaks of garnet. On the nose and in the mouth you'll find delicious aromas and flavors of dark red berries, both fresh and dried, herbs, flowers, organic earth, and black rock minerals.
Lovely and rich, it boasts an approachable softness with a serious structure of chewy tannins and elegant acidity. Complex and sophisticated, we are grateful, and a little surprised that Barolo of this quality is still available under forty bucks!
“Stitched with pure cherry and raspberry fruit, this red is supple and fragrant, showing lovely harmony. Mineral, tar and eucalyptus accents add detail. There's plenty of structure, with vibrant acidity and refined tannins focusing the finish. Elegant, with the potential to develop over the next two decades. Best from 2027 through 2045. 5,800 cases made, 4,000 cases imported.”
          - 94 Points, Wine Spectator (8/18/2024)
Approachable in its youth, this wine will be even better in another 2-3 years, and will drink beautifully for another 10-15! We wish we had double the quantity of this Barolo to offer. By the time this wine lands on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list (just a hunch) it’ll be long gone! Don’t wait - grab several bottles now.
2019 Voerzio Martini "La Serra" Barolo
Piedmont, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gianni Voerzio recently retired and sold his winery to a young brother and sister team - Mirko and Federica Martini. To honor Gianni, the new owners named the Serralunga d’Alba property “Voerzio Martini.” Since Voerzio lives just down the road, he still stops by the property regularly, consulting with the young Martini siblings.

You’ve likely heard the name Voerzio before. Gianni Voerzio’s brother, Roberto Voerzio, is one of the most famous producers in the region. If you wanted to buy a bottle of Roberto Voerzio “La Serra” Barolo from the incredible 2019 vintage, it’d set you back $400 or more.

This wine from his brother's former property normally sells for about ¼ the price. Today, thanks to some Vin Chicago magic, we’ve got a limited supply of this 95-Point wine for even less!

“This red strings together bright cherry, raspberry, currant, floral, spice and mineral aromas and flavors on an elegant frame. Firm yet harmonious, with a lingering, succulent aftertaste. Shows fine potential. Best from 2027 through 2046. 500 cases made, 112 cases imported.”
          - 95 Points, Wine Spectator (4/30/2024)

Only 112 cases were imported to the US. As with the Damilano above, we expect this one to disappear in a flash!
