98-Point Barolo Greatness from Vajra
Is it possible we love the wines from G.D. Vajra too much? It feels like we’re continuously touting the delicious range from this artisan family. But, how could we not? No other Piedmont grower, and maybe no other winery in the world, bottles such an exciting collection of reds, at both the entry and premium tier, as skillfully and consistently as the Vajra family.
Today we offer two Vajra wines, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Leading off is the G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo 2024 (94 Points, $21.79). Pure and authentic, it gives all the lovely red fruits, earth and accessible structure we love in a Piedmont red. When given air, it surprises and delights with even more layers of flavor and sneaky complexity.
Next is a stunning single-vineyard Barolo from the exceptional 2021 vintage, the G. D. Vajra "Bricco Delle Viole" Barolo 2021 (98 Points, $85.99) is a simply magical wine. We enjoyed our bottle over the course of several days and were continually seduced by its silky texture and layered deliciousness.

2024 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo
Piedmont, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~
Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Barolo and Barbaresco, is often bottled varietally by Piedmont producers. As wine lovers, we are grateful, as these entry tier Nebbiolo bottlings aren’t just great values relative to their more expensive big brothers, they’re an opportunity to experience the wonderful flavors of the variety within a soft, accessible structural frame.
While Giuseppe Vaira and his siblings are most famous for their Barolo, their ability to craft these exceptional varietal wines might be even more impressive.
“This wine is our quest for the innocence of Nebbiolo, its purest expression.”
- Giuseppe Vajra
Sourced from the Vajra family's organically farmed plots, the 2024 Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo is essentially declassified Barolo, crafted in a "drink me now" style. Light in color and impact, it’s the kind of wine we love suggesting for the weeknight dinner table. Showing taut red berries, hints of dusty earth, flowers and a food friendly crunch, it’s unmistakably Nebbiolo. Finishing with mouthwatering energy and just a bit of chewy tannin, it is a perfect pairing for Chicken Marsala and so much more!
“Bright as a just-picked cherry, this Nebbiolo zips across the palate like lightning in a summer storm. Rose petals and almost-ripe raspberries dance with wisps of bay leaf, while tart cherries and red currants build like a wave, letting the savory herbs play between their bright beats. It's a lesson in how to make a serious wine sing for everyone's table. Editors' Choice.”
2021 G.D. Vajra "Bricco Delle Viole" Barolo
Piedmont, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~
With vines dating back to 1931, the Vajra's prized “Bricco Delle Viole” (Hill of Violets) site is a high elevation, certified organic vineyard, and home to the family’s most famous wine. One we have loved for years.
“Great wines evoke emotions along with firing the senses.”
- Wine Enthusiast, November 2025
Everything for this wine is done in small lots, by hand, organically, with little to no intervention. Raised in old Slovenian casks, this incredibly pure and beautiful wine is a shining example of why the best Barolo wines are often compared to top Red Burgundies.
Packed with flavor, yet entirely minimalist in nature, this elegant and texturally sophisticated wine is a glorious effort that drinks beautifully from the beginning. As you sample the bottle over the course of a few days, it will become obvious that there is much more here for the patient drinker. Complex and thrilling, this is a “Wow” wine, earning a strong 96 Points from our tasters. We’re the conservative ones, however, as these 97- and 98-point reviews reveal...
“The 2021 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is more refined and complete at this tasting, with more depth than the Coste delle Rose, exhibiting notes of raspberry liqueur, pressed flowers, sweet herbs, and fresh earth. A very pure and well-balanced vintage for this wine, it really shines with exceptional detail, offering even tannins and a balanced, seamless structure throughout. It feels as though this wine will offer the broadest window for enjoyment, thanks to its purity and length, which are quite profound. Drink over the coming decades. In the cellar, it underwent 51 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 24 months of cask aging before being bottled. Maturity: 2025 - 2045.”

“Great wines evoke emotions along with firing the senses. This wine hits the soul like Sappho's sanctuary, "where cold water ripples and roses bloom everywhere," making you want to feel more, express more, share more. This is the true essence of wine, and like Sappho's verses, it reveals its beauty layer by layer just as this wine opens with aromas of boysenberry jam mingling with sour cherries, hints of licorice root and allspice, all dusted with rose petals. The palate is pure elegance, charming and flirtatious enough to give you butterflies, as savory notes and subtle dried orange peel weave through red fruits and lifted acidity. This is purity in a bottle. Drink Now - 2050.”

“The organic G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole first shows a fragile side, but it eventually rolls onto much greater momentum and focus as it opens in the glass. This is always one of my favorite wines from this excellent producer, and I love it especially thanks to its fine nuances of redcurrant, pressed flower and something a little savory like peat moss. There is a hint of ashy stone or brimstone. All of these little details emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021. Fruit comes from a seven-hectare plot at 400 to 480 meters in elevation on Sant'Agata marl soils with marine fossils. Drink Date: 2027 - 2045.”

Most top single-parcel Barolos sell in the $100 to $200+ range. The $105 release price and $97 median online retail for this Vajra flagship are already impressive. Our price is even better. Enjoy a bottle or two now and drink the rest over the coming 20+ years!
