2023 Cloudline Cellars Pinot Noir
Willamette Valley, Oregon
~~~~~~~~~~~
Véronique Drouhin and her Domaine Drouhin team complement a foundation of fruit from their famous Roserock estate in Eola-Amity Hills with grapes from other cool-climate vineyards throughout the valley. The result is a silky smooth Pinot Noir that boasts quality, complexity and overall tasty goodness that are well beyond expectations for its seventeen dollar price!
With a strikingly beautiful ruby red core and soft magenta edges, this Pinot is love at first sight. The nose is clean as a whistle and invites you in with a bouquet of fresh red berries and floral tones. Seductive flavors of fresh cherries, raspberries, rose petals, and subtle baking spices dance across the wine’s medium bodied frame, with its impressive depth and richness balanced beautifully by mouthwatering acidity and an energetic finish. As with so many reds, this sophisticated Pinot is best served with a slight chill, and it begs to be matched with a bite of grilled salmon, pork chop, pizza Margherita, or summer salad with strawberries and goat cheese.
Looking online, we found 114 listings with a median of $20. At that price, this wine is an absurd value. At 15% less than that, our price makes it even more of a slam dunk!
Gorgeous Gevrey-Chambertin Monopole from a Third Generation Family Grower!
2021 Pierre Gelin “Clos de Meixvelle” Monopole
Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
Already drinking great, and with the structure to develop beautifully over the coming decade or two, Domaine Pierre Gelin’s 2021 “Clos de Meixvelle” is a Burgundy lover’s dream that totally delivers the goods.

Domaine Pierre Gelin was founded a century ago in the small village of Fixin. In the 1940’s, Pierre began working the vines in Clos de Meixvelle, a small vineyard that sits near the heart of Gevrey on alluvial soils atop Burgundy’s classic limestone base. In 1961, Pierre purchased the entire Clos de Meixvelle vineyard, making it a monopole.

These prized vines are now farmed organically by Pierre’s grandson, Pierre-Emmanuel. In 2021 he perfectly captured the magic and charm of what makes Gevrey-Chambertin one of the greatest places on earth to grow Pinot Noir. The grapes from this tiny plot are 100% destemmed, then fermented using indigenous yeast. The wine then slumbers for nearly two years in small, 228L Burgundian pièce barrels, 15% of which being new.

The result is a gorgeous and classic expression of Gevrey-Chambertin. Dark berry fruits lead the way with a supporting cast of fresh turned earth, riverbed stones, and well integrated oak spice. The palate is round and silky smooth with incredible depth and a powerful, elegant structure.

After tasting the wine a few weeks ago, we immediately grabbed the small allocation of this 500 case production cuvée that made its way to Chicago. Looking online we find seven listings with a median of $98. At nearly ten bucks less, our price beats them all. Grab a few bottles while supplies last to enjoy now or to cellar for drinking many years down the road!
