2020 Domaine Paul Autard "Cuvée La Côte Ronde"
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône Valley, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
The Domaine Paul Autard 2020 "Cuvée La Côte Ronde" Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an equal part blend of Grenache and Syrah coming from a small 90-year-old plot filled with rolled pebbles and fossilized limestone blocks. This rich and concentrated, front-loaded and deeply fruited red offers up copious amounts of mixed red, blue, and blackberries popping with notes of black pepper, smoked meat, wild green herbs, warm stony earth tones, and an oak-inspired layer of vanilla, cocoa bean, and baking spices. A veritable flavor explosion!
This under-the-radar gem grabs your attention as soon as you pop the cork and begs for a spot next to a medium-rare porterhouse and morel mushrooms. Check out Jeb Dunnuck's and Wine Spectator's rave reviews...
"The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Côte Ronde is an even split of Grenache and Syrah, and as usual, was brought up all in new oak. It has an awesome nose of cassis, blackberries, graphite, ground pepper, and violets, with its new oak perfectly integrated into the wine. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has impressive tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. This brilliant effort will keep for 10-15 years. Maturity: 2022 - 2037.”
- 95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (11/11/2022)
"Opulent and winey, with a ripe mix of cherry and blackberry puree notes encased in sweet cedar and spices. Packs a lot of power, with beautiful texture on the fleshy palate. Showing savoriness, thanks to black pepper and garrigue, this is a well-done version of a modern style. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2030. 500 cases made, 100 cases imported.”
- 93 Points, Wine Spectator (9/30/2023)
Wine Spectator's reference price is $65, a very fair price for this small-production, big-flavored Châteauneuf. We found only one online listing for $59.99. Our price is much lower, and we suspect our limited supply will get snapped up in a flash!
The 2022 bottling of Paul Autard’s Cotes-du-Rhône is a classic "GSM" blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, and it is flat-out delicious!
Fermented and raised in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for a quick 6 months and then bottled, this delicious red blend is filled with beautifully bright flavors of raspberry, strawberry, cherry, and red currant, all wonderfully complemented by lifted aromatic notes of lavender, classic Southern Rhône garrigue, and a dash of black pepper. An underlying stony minerality appears in the wine’s lengthy finish, adding continued depth and complexity.
