2020 Jiménez-Landi "Sotorrondero"
Méntrida, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain
~~~~~~~~~~~
Perched at an elevation of 2,500 feet in the sandy granitic soils of the Sierra de Gredos, cousins José and Dani harvest the fruit for Sotorrondero from two parcels of organically-farmed old vines planted among a mountainous pine and juniper forest strewn with wild walnut, chestnut and strawberry trees.
The resulting wine is elegant and vibrant with cherry, mountain herbs, red clay, dried red florals, orange zest, salumi and a vibrant kick of mineral tension that keeps things very fresh.
Likening this to a racier vintage of Gigondas with a splash of our favorite Willamette Valley Pinot mixed in, it is extremely versatile at the table. Four years after the following review was written, this is drinking at its peak, and is available for a silly low price!
“A wild nose, full of dried herbs, white pepper, red cherries and cranberries. Some blue flowers, too. Don’t be fooled by the relatively light and transparent color, as there are plenty of firm tannins on the palate, giving it a structured, full-bodied mouth-feel. A little austere, but racy, too. Drinkable now, but better from 2024.”
2024 Can Raflos Dels Caus ”Terraprima” Blanco
Penedès, Catalonia. Spain
~~~~~~~~~~~
An organically-farmed blend of 80% Xarelo-lo and 20% Macabeo, this bright and vibrant white features a delicious abundance of apple and pear flavors layered with lemon peel and orange blossom. The medium-bodied palate is juicy and explosive with pronounced minerality that adds a very refreshing kick to the lengthy finish.
Our sample bottle of this striking wine drank flawlessly over the course of three days. Pair with seafood, Thai, or enjoy all on its own. Fans of Alabriño, Pecorino, and Grüner Veltliner are going to love this!
“The 2024 Blanc Terraprima is composed of 80% Xarel·lo and 20% Macabeo from the Massís del Garraf in Penedès, with one-fifth of the Xarel·lo aged in barrel. The nose opens with delicate notes of green apple and pear, a hint of anise and Mediterranean scrubland herbs. It is dry, with a lightly chalky texture and malic acidity that brings tension. This wine delivers a fresh, modern take on a Mediterranean white.”
