Inspired by the reds of the Northern Rhône, winemaker Andrew Jones searched up and down the Central Coast for a vineyard with soil resembling that of Crozes-Hermitage. When he found Zabala Vineyard, he knew it was the perfect source for his Monterey County interpretation of old-world Syrah.

Sadly, he could not get consistent access to the fruit and, after several vintages, he shut down the project. Looking to move out the final cases, Andrew poured a sample for us earlier this year.

We loved it, struck a deal, and today bring you his charming 2022 “Zabala Vineyard” Syrah for 55% below what he sold it for in the tasting room!

Read on for the tasty details of this mega-blowout red, and for nearly-as-big savings on an opulent 96-pointer from K Vintners, then slam down on the Big Green Button before they both vanish.

2022 Field Recordings “Zabala Vineyard” Syrah
Arroyo Seco, Central Coast, California
~~~~~~~~~~~
As a full-time vine nurseryman for over two decades, there are not many people who have more comprehensive knowledge of the vineyards of California's Central Coast than Andrew Jones.
For this project, he honed in on the Monterey County's Zabala Vineyard, a site that offers similar soils and topography to the Northern Rhône region of Crozes-Hermitage, home to many of his favorite Syrahs.
Pouring a deep purple color with blackberry and dark cherry aromas, his 2022 Zabala Vineyard Syrah offers up nuanced flavofrs of ripe dark berries, violets, lavender, black pepper, wild game and a subtle rocky earthiness.
Its soft, medium-bodied mouthfeel lays atop a fresh, vibrant, easy-drinking palate. The tannins are light and the finish is lengthy and fruit-driven. We popped a bottle again over the weekend and found it perfect with bacon cheddar burgers hot off the grill.
At the winery Andrew sold it for $45. Thanks to a bit of love from the big guy himself, we're able to bring the last few cases to you today for a whole lot less!
Charles Smith Powerhouse!
2019 K Vintners ”The Hidden” Syrah
Wahluke Slope, Washington
~~~~~~~~~~~
The name of this wine refers to Northridge Vineyard, a hidden gem planted over 20 years ago at an elevation of 1,200 feet in Washington’s Wahluke Slope AVA. Untouched by the ancient Missoula floods, it features a unique bed of loamy, fine sand over silica limestone.

This ideal combination of soil and elevation resulted in winemaker Charles Smith creating a 2019 bottling that now, nearly seven years later, is just getting started in showing off its remarkable depth, power, concentration, minerality, and elegance. This trio of 96-Point reviews magnificently captures its specialness and beauty...

“The 2019 Syrah The Hidden comes from the Northridge Vineyard and is another rich, burly wine that needs bottle age. Both red and black fruits, charcoal, smoky oak, and pepper define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied, has building tannins, and a great finish. I wouldn't open a bottle for at least 2-3 years. Maturity: After 2024.”
          - 96+ Points, Jeb Dunnuck (7/9/2022)

"Ripe black cherry, blackberry and whole and ground peppercorn on the nose. Full-bodied with fine, taught tannins. There is excellent depth and richness here with toasted black fruit and notes of leather and dried rose. Very well balanced with great complexity and intensity. Drink or hold."
          - 96 Points, James Suckling (2/10/2022)

“The 2019 Syrah The Hidden is impossible to ignore, balsamic with grilled herbs and currants accentuated by minty herbs. This blends both elegance and power, deeply textural with a core of juicy wild berry fruit. Balsamic spices and mineral tones give way to a coating of grippy tannins. The 2019 finishes structured and long with a cheek-puckering tension. Bitter blackberry and sage notes fade slowly. The Hidden Syrah is sourced from the Wahluke slope, planted at 1,200 feet and in broken basalt soils. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2036.”
          - 96 Points, Vinous - Eric Guido (5/2023)

Jeb Dunnuck and Vinous both quote $75. Today's special “move-it-out” price obliterates all 32 online listings. Only a few cases available!
