As former assistant winemaker at Screaming Eagle, Massimo knows that great Cabernet requires a great vineyard. From this special site in the Mayacamas mountains, just over the ridge line from Mount Veeder, he and Erin have created something very special.
“Drawn like a magnet to this Moon Mountain site, we fell madly in love with the Charlie Smith Vineyard and its promised brilliance. Already a cherished secret among Moon Mountain winegrowers, we found new inspiration in its rocky, west-facing slopes. Historically farmed by winegrowing legend Phil Coturri, this site yields Bordeaux varietals with complex structure and bold, expressive fruit. Fittingly, the rocks underfoot at Charlie Smith are nearly as dark purple as the wines it produces.”

Inky, dark and explosive, with grippy tannins and exceptional balance, the 2021 is so impressive. “From a vineyard located in Nun's Canyon on the western side of the Mayacamas range, Di Costanzo picked the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Charlie Smith Vineyard a couple of weeks later than nearby Montecelio Vineyard. On the nose, it offers up cool, minty aromas, with some cassis and black cherries. It's reminiscent of the winery's Caldwell Vineyard bottling on the nose, but it's full-bodied and rich on the palate, generous, concentrated and long, with hints of licorice on the tannic but ripe finish. Drink Date: 2027 - 2045.”
