Châteauneuf-du-Pape Elegance from Jean-Paul Daumen!

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Elegance from Jean-Paul Daumen!

We lead off this new year with an exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Jean-Paul Daumen, one of the Southern Rhône Valley's top proponents of natural and organic winemaking.

"There are few wines I’d rather drink than those of Vieille Julienne."
- Jeb Dunnuck, October 2020

Not only did Jean-Paul's 2022 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne "Les Trois Sources" Châteauneuf earn a rave 97-point review from Jeb Dunnuck, it also landed on the Wine Spectator "Top 100" list. We are very happy to have a few cases to offer today. Scroll down for the details, then click on the Big Green Button to secure a few bottles.

2022 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne "Les Trois Sources"
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
As with all of the Domaine de la Vieille Julienne wines, this premium Châteauneuf-du-Pape is totally unique. From the highly successful and generous 2022 harvest it is a wine of power, but it is truly defined by its elegance and Burgundy-like texture.
“Jean-Paul focuses first and foremost on his vineyards, which are all farmed organically and sustainably, minuscule yields, no SO2 during vinification, aging in neutral foudres and tank, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. The result is a naked, raw expression of this magical terroir and old vines.”
- Jeb Dunnuck, August 2018
We first tasted the 2022 "Les Trois Sources" over the summer when Jean-Paul visited our Elston Avenue store. Offering beautiful red fruits, florals, spices and lifted earth minerals, this Grenache driven blend contains nearly all of the 13 traditional grape varieties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape - Cinsault, Syrah, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Muscardin, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulec, Clairette and Picardan.
Give a good decanting and you'll be rewarded by an outstanding wine with the stuffing to develop further over the coming decade and beyond. It's 95 points on our scale, took home the #83 spot on Wine Spectator's "Top 100" list, and earned this 97-point review from Jeb Dunnuck...
“The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from a terroir similar to the Reserve and is based on 70% Grenache, 10% Cinsault, 5% each Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Counoise, and the rest a mix of varieties. Ripe blackberries, roasted garrigue, loamy soil, licorice, and a kiss of graphite all emerge on the nose, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautiful yet building tannins, and a great finish. It's slightly more open and expressive than the Les Hauts-Lieux, yet I suspect both of these cuvées will cruise for two decades. Maturity: 2024 - 2044.”
          - 97 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (10/19/2024)
“Shows subdued, hidden power and a gorgeous texture, though this is just beginning to unfurl. Warm earth, brown bread and toasted anise notes infuse a perfumed core of red fruit. Racy acidity keeps the tension high, and there's a licorice snap detail on the finish, which is defined, smoky and long. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut, Mourvèdre and Counoise. Best from 2027 through 2040. 2,200 cases made, 400 cases imported.”
