Pouring a deep opaque ruby color with viscous black and purple streaks, this impressive red gives ecstatic flavors of cassis, blackberry, dark flowers, pepper, coffee, vanilla, and baking spices. Front-loaded and mouth-filling, this impressive Venge-made red shows lifted brightness, warmth, and sultry concentration, all with character and authenticity.
When we first tasted this nicely balanced 14.9% ABV red a few months ago, we rated it 91 Points. We just tried it again and now boost that to an impressive 92 Points. “Enticing vanilla bean and cappuccino aromas lead to a velvety texture supporting dark chocolate, baked cherries, cinnamon and nutmeg flavors. This silky and plump wine ought to be the best selling Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley. Opening with plush notes of cassis, leather, singed vanilla bean, cocoa powder, blueberry jam, and kirsch, this is a “wow” wine that earns 94 Points on our scale and easily competes with Napa Cabs selling at twice its price.
Using his longtime family relationships, Kirk sources fruit from some of the greatest vineyards in Napa Valley, including Beckstoffer’s George III Vineyard in Rutherford, Stagecoach in Atlas Peak, Haymaker in Howell Mountain, and Hewitt Vineyard in Calistoga. Offering the full mouthfeel and flavor of Caymus in a more nuanced, more complex, more refined package, the value here is extraordinary.
Impactful and inviting from the moment the cork is popped, the 2022 Silencieux has a luscious attack of fruit, a beautifully enduring finish and the soft, silky tannins that are a Kirk Venge signature. Oxygen exposure allows further complexity to emerge, with subtle notes of roasted plum, toffee, rosemary, and cream.
