Marvelous Burgundy from Marsannay Master Cyril Audoin!
Once relatively unknown, the vineyards of Burgundy's Marsannay region have been earning an entirely new kind of respect in recent years, and much of this new found respect is due to the efforts of Domaine Charles Audoin.
“You could easily mistake this for a Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru from a leading producer"
- James Suckling, July 2024
With the completion of their winery and a move to organic farming, Cyril Audoin and his father have exploded the quality of their wines and they have never been better. Thanks to consumer awareness lagging behind the quality boost, pricing remains unusually low for these beautiful Burgundies, and the value is outstanding!
We were able to get hold of a small supply of three of Cyril's wines from the 2022 and 2023 vintages and are thrilled to bring them to you today. Read on for the details, then hit the Big Yellow Button while supplies last!
==========
2022 Domaine Charles Audoin Bourgogne Rouge
Côte d’Or, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
In a sea of highly-priced, less than stellar Bourgogne Rouges, today's bottling from Audoin stands out as a revelation!
Balanced and pure, with the stuffing to satisfy those who enjoy a little heft in their Pinots, this delightful Burgundy really got our blood going. From the moment we popped the cork, this wine is delicious, and it gets even more integrated and more complex with air.
This rich, deep, and seductive red comes from Cyril's half-century old Pinot Noir vines in Marsannay. In the hot, dry 2022 growing season, their fruit sings powerfully. There's an uncommonly dense mouthfeel here, with enticing dark berry and black currant fruit flavors. Alluring notes of black truffle and a subtle meatiness further add to the sophistication.
The character and completeness here will appeal to new and old world Pinot Noir lovers alike. And, and the price is right. At our sub-$40, beats every listing in the country price, this is one for Burgundy lovers to snap up by the six-pack.
2022 Domaine Charles Audoin "Clos du Roy"
Marsannay, Côte d’Or, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
Due to historic circumstances, there is not a single Premier Cru vineyard in the entire commune of Marsannay. There is, however, a longstanding movement to remedy this injustice. At the top of the list for promotion? The storied "Clos du Roy" vineyard that is the source for this wine!
Arguably the finest vineyard in the region, Audoin's bottling historically shows excellent depth and elegance along with the ability to age effortlessly for many years.
As we were only able to get our hands on three cases, we defer to James Suckling for his 95-point review. Given the warmth and ripeness of the 2022 vintage, expect this wine to be approachable young, and also reward patience.
“What an enticing nose of red fruits with only a whiff of toasty oak. Charming and filigree with super-silky tannins and an underlying firmness supporting the medium- to full-bodied palate. You could easily mistake this for a Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru from a leading producer, particularly in the very long and precise, minerally finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

Plus a Rare Burgundy Rosé!
2023 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay Rosé
Côte d’Or, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
Marsannay is the only commune in Burgundy whose Rosé has been granted its own AOC status. Today, we are very excited to offer Audoin’s noteworthy 2023 Marsannay Rosé!
This gastronomic wine is 100% Pinot Noir, and it has a tantalizing intensity and tension that kept us returning to our glasses sip after sip. Bursting from the glass are notes of both ripe and unripe strawberries along with red currants. A balanced saline minerality follows beautifully on the finish.
Lovely on its own, it also will work oh, so well with summer salads, grilled chicken and fish. In the unlikely case you can keep your hands off your bottles until November, it would be a smash hit with your Thanksgiving feast!
