2022 Domaine Joseph Voillot "Vieilles Vignes"
Pommard, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
While Domaine Joseph Voillot is based in Volnay, we lead off today with a small-production bottling made predominantly from their holding in the Les Cras vineyard of Pommard.
Full of peppery red fruit and spice with a commendable range of earthy complexity, mineral tension and lift, this is the whole package and it transcends its “village” level status. Bold, with typical Voillot grace, it is a wine we love. We score 93+ Points, closely in line with its Volnay brothers!
"The youngest vines in the Pommard "Vieilles Vignes" bottling from Etienne Chaix were planted in 1983, but the vast majority were planted in the decade of the 1960s and the oldest all the way back in 1934! The wine in 2022 is again a very svelte thirteen percent octane and quite classically proportioned. The bouquet hops from the glass in a vibrant and complex blend of red plums, cherries, gamebird, a complex base of soil tones, bonfire, peonies and a touch of oak. On the palate the wine is bright, red fruity, full-bodied and soil-driven in personality, with a fine core, ripe, well-integrated tannins, lovely focus and a long, nascently complex and impeccably balanced finish. This is a proper young Pommard and will demand some time along in the cellar, but it is going to be excellent juice once it starts to drink."
2022 Domaine Joseph Voillot "Les Fremiets" 1er Cru
Volnay, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
The hidden jewel of Voillot is their small holding in the limestone rich soiled Premier Cru of Fremiets. Dark toned, elegant and fresh, it brings a cascade of wild brambles, cassis, strawberry, and pepper. Lifted and lovely with complex chalky grip on the finish, it is near impossible to refuse a second glass. We go slightly above Gilman’s great review, rating it a full 94 Points on the Vin Chicago scale.
"The 2022 Volnay 'les Fremiets' from Domaine Joseph Voillot is another impeccably balanced example of the vintage, again coming in at thirteen percent alcohol. The bouquet is pure, precise and nicely black fruity in personality, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, dark berries, coffee bean, a lovely foundation of dark soil tones, gamebird, fresh thyme, a gentle framing of cedar and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, transparent and beautifully proportioned, with a fine core of black fruit, excellent soil signature, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a long, tangy, complex and focused finish. This is an excellent bottle of Volnay."

2022 Domaine Joseph Voillot "Les Champans" 1er Cru
Volnay, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
Coming from the centrally located, clay-rich soils of the Premier Cru of Champans, this ripe, deep Burgundy is an unbridled version of Volnay. The old vines kick-up gutsy power, with rich, plump cherry fruit ensconced in nervy, white stone minerals, fresh herbs and fresh-ground coffee beans. Given the cellaring potential here, our 94+ Point Vin Chicago assessment may even be conservative!
"The 2022 Volnay “les Champans” from Domaine Joseph Voillot is one of the riper bottlings in Etienne Chaix’s lineup in this vintage, but still only tips the scales at 13.5 percent octane. The wine is beautiful on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet very precise, pure and red fruity in personality this year, offering up scents of cherries, strawberries, a touch of blood orange, gamebird, bonfire, gentle spice tones and a discreet framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is bright, tangy, full-bodied and soil-driven in personality, with a beautiful core of red fruit, fine-grained tannins and superb focus and balance on the long, ripely tannic and vibrant finish. This is a great bottle of young Champans (made from vines that average sixty-eight years of age, with the oldest planted in 1934)! Drink: 2035-2085."
