2023 Stolpman "La Cuadrilla" Red Blend
Santa Barbara County, California
~~~~~~~~~~~
Packed with fruit, texture, character and energy, this is a seriously kick-ass American red. Blending 50% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 15% Sangiovese from the family’s estate and nearby land farmed by Stolpman's longtime vineyard manager Ruben Solorzano, this silky-textured red is peppery and savory with juicy flavors of fresh-picked wild strawberries, black raspberry and hints of blue fruit. Finishing with a vibrancy that few red blends can provide, it is so darn tasty. Looking for a red to serve on the 4th? This is it.
“The 2023 La Cuadrilla is one of the better values in all California wine.”
Just how tasty is this wine? Well, we love it enough to give 92 points. And, guess what, so do the tasting teams at Wine Advocate and Vinous!
“A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Sangiovese whose proceeds are divided among Stolpman's vineyard workers, the 2023 La Cuadrilla is one of the better values in all California wine. It opens with a beautifully floral, energetic nose supplemented with focused, leathery accents. The palate is plush and succulent, concluding with a quenching, juicy and simply delicious finish framed by fine-grained tannins. Drink Date: 2024 - 2028.”
- 92 Points, Wine Advocate (10/10/2024)
“The 2023 La Cuadrilla is a fabulous entry-level offering. Bright, punchy and full of character, the 2023 delivers superb quality and striking purity of fruit. It’s also a fabulous value. This blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Sangiovese is lights-out. Drinking Window: 2024 - 2031.”
- 92 Points, Vinous - Antonio Galloni (7/2024)
This wine has a depth to its flavor, texture and structure that one would be happy to find in bottlings from California or France costing 50% more. On hot days, 30 minutes in the fridge prior to popping the bottle is just what the doctor ordered, especially with grilled meats, fish or vegetables.
Winery price is $26. Median online retail is $24. At either of those prices, this one is worth picking up. At our price, this beautiful red is an epic slam dunk!
