Domaine de la Petite Roche Brut NV
Saumur, Loire Valley, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
The Regnard family has been farming grapes in the Anjou-Saumur district since 1791. In recent years, their stunning Champagne method sparkler has developed quite a loyal following at Vin Chicago.
Domaine de la Petite Roche Brut NV is composed of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Chardonnay that spent 12 months on its lees before being bottled with a 6.5 g/L dosage, roughly half the limit for Brut Champagne.
Leading with fresh bubbles and simple citrus fruit flavors, this refined Loire sparkler quickly reveals additional mineral tones and subtle herb notes as it opens in your glass.
Finishing with chalky grip and bright acidity, it is one of those wines you'll find yourself coming back to again and again. Enjoy any night of the week with ramen, Thai, fried chicken and just about anything else. There's enough nuance, finesse and charm here to keep a lover of quality Champagne happy, while still being super accessible for large gatherings, celebrations and parties.
Looking online we find five listings. Our price beats them all. The fact that we are still able to sell this for under $20 in today's climate is a testament to the way we source our wine. 2024 Domaine des Varinelles "L’Inconnu"
Saumur-Champigny, Loire Valley, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
Domaine des Varinelles is now in their 5th generation of winemaker, since being established in 1890. As co-founders of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, they continue to be an important family in the region, with 43 hectares of vineyards all worked organically and hand-harvested.
L’Inconnu translates to ‘The Unknown’ but once you put your nose in a glass of this wine you'll find it to be unmistakably Loire Cabernet Franc. The wine goes through carbonic maceration in concrete vats to maintain a fruity character and harness the tannins and grip, and it is always the winery's first red of the vintage to be bottled, sometimes as early as mid-January, with a very short time in barrel beforehand.
Aromas of tart cherry and raspberry are simply, fresh, vibrant and quite appealing. On the palate, notes of slightly darker cherry and blackcurrant emerge. At a lithe 11% ABV, the wine is delightfully light on its feet. Savory spice and herbaceous character provide complexity and interest as the wine opens more in the glass, complementing the fruit-driven nature nicely.
You can easily put a light chill on this one and enjoy as an aperitif or with grilled chicken, stuffed peppers or charcuterie boards. A Vin Chicago exclusive, there are no other listings for in the US. A tremendous value in artisan Loire Valley Cabernet Franc from an established family house!
