2019 Aquilini "A56" Red Blend
Red Mountain, Columbia Valley, Washington
~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the Aquilini family purchased a large swath of prime vineyard land in the Red Mountain AVA of Washington State nearly 15 years ago, they wasted no time in hiring Napa's legendary consultant, Philippe Melka, to lead their winemaking team.
They produced only 848 cases of their 2019 "A56" Red Blend. Thanks to a right-time, right-place scenario, we bring it to you today, on a pre-arrival basis, for an absolutely crazy price.
Hand-harvested from Washington’s most prestigious region for powerful Bordeaux varieties, Melka and his team raised it for 22 months in equal parts new and previously used French oak, followed by a few more years in bottle. Now, at over six years of age, this "succulent and layered" red is packed with oomph and impact.
Finishing with warmth and power, it earns a strong 93+ points on the Vin Chicago scale. That is right in line with these accolades from Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck:
Wine Advocate, 93+ Points:
(5/11/2023) "Composed of 40% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Red Blend A56 offers a succulent and layered nose with ripe, juicy fruit tones that sway with notions of dusty cherry skin, black raspberry, blackberry and red plum with elegant baking spices. Full-bodied, generously layered and firm, the palate is still a touch tight and will benefit from at least one additional year in the cellar before stretching its legs. The mid-palate offers a firm tannic layer that is slightly chewy at the moment before gliding to a long,. lingering and ever-evolving finish. Only 848 cases were produced after the wine rested for 22 months in 50% new French oak. Give it a try. Drink Date: 2024 - 2034."
Jeb Dunnuck, 94 Points:
(6/14/2023) "Based on 40% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Petit Verdot, it has lots of ripe red and black fruits, chocolate, tobacco, and spicy notes in its medium to full-bodied, plump, round, delicious profile. It's well worth seeking out."
At the winery, this tastes-like-$100 charmer sold for $60. Looking online we find seven listings with a median of $48.
