“Aromas reminiscent of wild rose, eucalyptus, violet and baking spice mingle together on this stunning red. Structured and elegant, the taut palate is still youthfully austere, offering juicy red cherry, raspberry, star anise and menthol framed in tightly knit but extremely refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced and vibrant. Hold for even more complexity. Drink 2027–2044.”
          - 96 Points, Kerin O’Keefe "(4/2023)

“A bright, solidly built red, with aromas of hay, cherry and plum leading to juicy fruit flavors complemented by wild herbs. Shows a supple texture offset by dense tannins, while the finish incorporates sweet spices. Best from 2026 through 2043. 2,900 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.”
          - 94 Points, Wine Spectator (10/31/2023)

“Captivating aromas of roses, cherries, strawberries and fresh oranges. Medium to full body with extremely fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Succulent and extremely long and persistent. Such class. Drinkable but better in two or three years.”

2021 Elvio Cogno "Cascina Nuova" Barolo
Piedmont, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~
With this 2021 Barolo, Valter Fissore has crushed it! The son-in-law of Elvio Cogno, he crafted it from their 3 hectares in the Cascina Nuova vineyard.
Aged the old-school way in large Slovenian casks, this young Barolo has earned a quartet of 95- and 96-Point reviews. At under $70, it is an excellent choice for medium term cellaring!
“Showing impressive depth for what is the estate\'s entry level Barolo, the 2021 Cascina Nuova is a fantastic wine. It opens with alluring aromas of wild rose, forest berry, sun-warmed hay and dark spice that on the full-bodied, enveloping palate transform into succulent Marasca cherry, raspberry and star anise. Taut, refined tannins and fresh acidity provide balance. Drink 2028–2036.”
          - 96 Points, Kerin O’Keefe (7/2025)
“Supple and detailed, featuring aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, plum, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco. This is all about finesse and balance, with a gentle line of malleable tannins on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2046. 835 cases made, 275 cases imported.”
          - 95 Points, Wine Spectator (11/30/2025)
“This Barolo shows lavender, dried cranberries, licorice and a touch of tile on the nose. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and balanced, with lovely, succulent fruit complemented by incisive acidity. The tannins are fine grained yet chewy, but they gradually resolve toward the bright finish. Better from 2026.”
          - 96 Points, James Suckling (1/10/2025)
“The 2021 Barolo Cascina Nuova is highly aromatic and expressive of anise, incense, blood orange, and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied but with a well-defined, even feel as well as ripe tannins and ripe acidity. It offers exceptional aromatics and structure that are emblematic of the vintage, and it should only improve over the next two decades if stored in cool cellars. A mix of the two Nebbiolo clones (60% Lampia and 40% Michet), this was vinified with a long maceration and submerged cap for 40 days, followed by two years in barrels. Drink 2026-2046.”
