2016 Château Corbin
Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
What a gorgeous right bank red! Ready to drink now, with a structure that will allow for another 10+ years of development, it offers a collection of damson plum, macerated blackberry and cassis flavors dusted with clay and limestone earth, and hints of roasted herbs and cigar box. Check out these initial release notes from Vinous, Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck, along with the notes from a more recent retrospective tasting where Decanter Magazine's Andy Howard picked this as one of ten "Best Value" bottlings of the 2016 vintage!
“The 2016 Corbin is a gorgeous, supple Saint-Émilion that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Floral notes add brightness and energy to a core of red cherry and plum fruit. Hints of chocolate, leather and menthol shape the persistent, substantial finish. A racy wine with no hard edges and tons of pure harmony, the 2016 is simply impeccable today. Tasted two times. Drinking Window: 2018 - 2028."
- 93 Points, Vinous - Antonio Galloni (12/2018)
“Blended of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Corbin has quite a meaty nose with smoked meats and beef drippings over a core of black plum preserves with hints of bay leaves and garrigue. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy with a great core of muscular fruit and an earthy finish. Drink Date: 2021 - 2037."
- 93+ Points, Wine Advocate (11/30/2018)
“From a 13-hectare vineyard located north and west of the village of Saint-Emilion, the 2016 Château Corbin (83% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc aged in 50% new oak) showed beautifully in all my tastings. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a beautifully pure, elegant 2016 that gives up lots of limestone character in its red currants, graphite, dried flowers, and earthy aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied effort has solid mid-palate depth, a fine, elegant texture, ample structure, and a great finish. It's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15+ years. Maturity: 2021 - 2036.”
- 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (2/28/2019)
"One of the oldest estates in St-Emilion, Corbin is linked by family ties to the Cruse owned estate of Chateau d'Issan in Margaux. Just over 12 hectares, Chateau Corbin is located close to Cheval Blanc and the Pomerol border. This is a classic Bordeaux wine, with dark colour, intensity of black fruit on nose and palate, married with fresh acidity, spices and fine-grained tannins. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2034."
2019 Château Malescot-St.-Exupéry
Margaux, Bordeaux, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
Using ripe, plush fruit from Bordeaux's excellent 2019 vintage, Margaux's legendary Château Malescot has crafted a wonderfully intriguing and seductive wine! Check out these rave reviews, then secure a few bottles or a wood six-pack...
"The 2019 Malescot St. Exupéry is quite possibly the most elegant wine I have tasted here. Plush and radiant, the 2019 possesses notable depth with plenty of supporting structure beneath surprisingly tamed tannins. Gravel, dark red cherry/plum, spice, leather and dried flowers build over time. The 2019 is a magical wine endowed with tremendous character. Don't miss it. Drinking Window: 2029 - 2049."
- 96 Points, Vinous - Antonio Galloni (2/2022)
“The 2019 Malescot St. Exupery is generous and expressive, bursting with aromas of cassis, cherries and blackberries mingled with hints of loamy soil, dark chocolate and espresso roast. Full-bodied, broad and muscular, its fleshy core of fruit is framed by succulent acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will reward a bit of bottle age with flamboyant drinking. Drink Date: 2027 - 2060."
- 94 Points, Wine Advocate (4/7/2022)
“The 2019 Château Malescot Saint Exupéry has an almost old-school vibe in its cedary, herbal, meaty, almost gamey aromatics, but it has beautiful purity in its both black and blue fruits. Medium to full-bodied, on the palate, it's nicely concentrated, has building tannins, good mid-palate density, and a great finish. I don't think it matches the 2016 and 2018, but it's a seriously good Margaux that already offers pleasure. It won't hit maturity for another 7-8 years but should have a lengthy drinking plateau. Maturity: After 2029."
- 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (4/11/2022)
"Deep dark fruit and red fruit aromas with graphite are followed by a nuanced, juicy palate with vivid fruit, bright yet suave. The tannins are just a bit foreboding on the long finish, but that’s because it is so young. Give it time in your cellar, as this excellent wine is very balanced and has structure for the long haul. And still a great deal for the quality. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2055."
- 95 Points, Decanter (11/22/2021)
