The Best Rosé We’ve Tasted This Year ISN’T French!

The Best Rosé We’ve Tasted This Year ISN’T French!

Ask us where the best Rosé in the world come from and 99 times out of 100, our answer will be the Provence region of France. Today, we bring you the 1 out of 100. Heck, this wine isn’t even from France!

Hailing from Italy's Piedmont region, this Nebbiolo Rosato, from the legendary owner of Tuscany's Isole e Olena, blew us away. Capturing a 93-Point review from Vinous, it is just about as good as Rosé gets.

2024 Proprietà Sperino "Rosa del Rosa" Rosato
Piedmont, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~
Such a complete package, this palate-penetrating wine gives everything we love in a Provençal Rosé, plus a little something "extra" from the Nebbiolo. Dry, brisk and vibrant, it is the best of both worlds!
Paolo di Marchi, famed for his near half-century stewardship of Isole e Olena, crafts this wine with his son at their small estate in the shadow of the Matterhorn. Blending 85% Nebbiolo with the obscure Vespolina varietal, this impressive 2024 boasts precise notes of white peach, blood orange, strawberry and dried thyme along with a peppery nuance, classic minerality and a graceful tingle of structure that will keep the wine going strong for years... should you have the willpower to resist its charms now.
Awarding one of the highest scores they have given to any Rosé this year, Vinous writes...
“The 2024 Rosa del Rosa is nuanced in the glass, slowly evolving with hints of shaved ginger, pine and sweet smoke. It comes to life on the palate, opening with a pretty inner sweetness offset by citrus-infused orchard fruits and crisp mineral tones, all accelerated by juicy acidity. A cascade of ripe melon mixes with minty herbs as the 2024 finishes with exceptional length. Give this a little air to reveal its hidden charms. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2026.”
Like the great dry Rosés of Provence, this serious (and seriously delicious) wine will be even more wonderful next spring than it is now. Median online retail is $26. Our price beats every single listing!
2022 Domenico Clerico "Capisme-e" Nebbiolo
Langhe, Piedmont, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~
From land abutting the famed vineyards of Bussia and Ginestra, the great Barolo producer Domenico Clerico crafts small quantities of this 100% Langhe Nebbiolo from the Bricco San Pietro Vineyard.

While the grapes could be made into Barolo, winemaker Oscar Arrivabene prefers raising the juice in tank, creating a wine with light red berry freshness, softer tannins and bright acidity that is more approachable than most Barolo while maintaining the fine structure.

Pouring a translucent ruby color, the "Capisme-e" is shimmering and youthful in appearance. On the nose, inviting flavors of wild strawberry, raspberry and sour cherry lead to herbal, floral and mineral earth tones. On the palate the wine is juicy and gritty, immediately showing its Nebbiolo core of grip and mineral tension. With air, the expanded red fruits and spicy herbal flavors lend complexity to a lithe-yet-dense mouthfeel that finishes with high energy and pleasing Piedmontese-ness.

“This is a fun and informal wine with pretty primary fruit that recalls forest berry and cassis. The Domenico Clerico 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo Capisme-e (with 18,000 bottles released) is all about easy-drinking brightness and freshness. The aim here is transparency and energy. Nebbiolo sees a brief skin maceration and then goes into stainless steel and partly in amphorae only. Drink Date: 2023 - 2028.”
