Vincent Ledy Shines with his Micro-Production Burgundy!
The wines of Vincent Ledy have enthralled us since our first visit to his tiny Nuits-Saint-Georges winery in 2018. At 44 years of age, he is young, passionate, and incredibly talented.
Ledy is a staunch believer in letting his terroir and his grapes speak for themselves. Entirely eschewing the use of new oak, he ages all his wines for 18 months in barrels that have seen at least four vintages at other estates.
With no new oak to hide behind, meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar is paramount to the success and beauty of his pure, soulful wines.
While we love Vincent's wines, sourcing sufficient quantity to feature them in an email has been quite challenging. Today's offering of five of his 2022 vintage wines is our first email feature of Vincent Ledy Burgundy since the 2015 vintage!

2022 Domaine Vincent Ledy ”Les Combes” Burgundy, France

To call the Vincent Ledy "Les Combes" a micro-production wine would be an overstatement! The plot for this cuvée is located in Flagey-Echézeaux (yes, that Flagey-Echézeaux!), just across from Clos de Vougeot. It is a mere .085 hectares, a mere 9000 square feet! The exact age of the vines has not been officially determined, but they are at least 60 to 70 years old. This 100% destemmed Bourgogne Rouge has a chewy, feral quality and is dominated by musky black currant and black cherry notes. It’s delicious now, particularly following a decant of an hour or so, and has the stuffing to age nicely for several years. There are only two other listings in the US for this wine, starting at $45.00. We’re letting our small allotment fly at best-in-country pricing of just $36.99. It will be gone in a flash.

"Les Beaumonts"

Ledy’s “Les Beaumonts” comes from a parcel of 0.35 hectares, just under an acre. The grapes for this cuvée are also 100% destemmed, and the wine sees Ledy’s typical aging of 18 months in old oak barrels. The nose is redolent of dark cherries, black plums and black tea, with an underlying layer of earthy minerality. This has the most heft of the wines in today’s offer and will reward a few years of aging. The tannins are refined enough, however, for the wine to drink well now with a lengthy decant. As with the Les Combes, our tiny supply of this classic artisan Burgundy will go fast!

"La Vacherotte" Vieilles Vignes

The juice for this 100% whole-cluster cuvée comes from vines planted in 1954 just southwest of Nuits-Saint-George on a mid-slope plot that is one of the best in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. Bursting with notes of kirsch and red raspberries, this is the brightest of the wines on offer today. It is a gorgeous cuvée that beautifully balances lifted fruit notes and tannic structure. You’ll want to grab a couple bottles here since they too will disappear fast. The only online listing we could find is at $60. Honestly, we probably underpriced all of these wines!

"Les Porêts Saint-Georges" 1er Cru

This gorgeous 1er Cru red Burgundy comes from vines in Ledy's "Les Porêts Saint-Georges" parcel, planted in 1981. The fruit is 100% destemmed for this cuvée, and the wine is drinking beautifully now given a long decant. We enjoyed a glass on day one. When we revisited it and finished the bottle on day two, it was absolutely singing with enthralling notes of blackberry, baking spice and horehound candy. This is a gem that overdelivers now and will only get better with bottle age. A funny thing is that the vines are 45 years old - certainly old enough to be considered "vieilles vignes" - except that Vincent has a plot from this vineyard - featured immediately below - that is even older, planted in 1935! Only 12 bottles available.

"Les Porêts Saint-Georges" Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru

The 2015 bottling of this wine made us fall head over heels for Vincent Ledy’s wines, and we are so excited to share this rendition from the stellar 2022 vintage. This wine comes from a minuscule plot planted all the way back in 1935 by Ledy’s grandfather. While most Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy are legally allowed to produce around 35 hectolitres of wine per hectare, Ledy only produces 12 hectolitres per hectare for this 100% whole-cluster cuvée. This tremendous Burgundy has soaring aromatics of both red and black berries, earl grey tea and spice. It is an elegant wine that is shockingly approachable now, will very much reward aging of at least five years, and has the stuffing to go for a decade plus. There is only one other listing online that comes remotely close to our price, all others are at least $30 more. When we offered the 2015 vintage, we had 48 bottles to spread around; today we have just 23 bottles of this beauty available, but we love it so much we had to share!
