Wine Spectator Gives 92 Points to this Elegant $17.99 Red. Again!

For the sixth year in a row, this elegant, harmonious red has earned scores of 92 points (or higher) from both Wine Spectator and James Suckling:

Impressively, the price quoted by Wine Spectator has not changed a penny over those years. In fact, Wine Spectator lists the same $20 release price going all the back to the 2008 bottling!

2022 First Drop “Mother’s Milk” Shiraz
Barossa Valley, South Australia
~~~~~~~~~~~
Round, soft and smooth on the palate with well-structured tannins and a long, cocoa and coffee bean accented finish, the 2022 “Mother’s Milk” is the kind of Shiraz that puts a big smile on your face!
This concentrated red is front loaded with gobs of fresh blackberry, black cherry and plum beautifully comp
lemented by elegant and sophisticated aromas of fresh spearmint, eucalyptus, lavender and violet. These tasting notes from Wine Spectator and James Suckling both nail what it is that we love about this one...
“Offers a juicy, exuberant mix of blueberry preserves, fresh black cherry and cherry cola that's smooth and seamless. This complex red seamlessly integrates details of masala chai, bittersweet chocolate, violet, fresh earth, toasted cumin and white pepper on the firming finish. Drink now.”
          - 92 Points, Wine Spectator (6/30/2025)
“Juicy, spicy and chalky, this shiraz shows notes of currants, baking spices and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins. Juicy fruit character on the palate with a seductive, peppery and flavorful finish. Drink now. Screw cap.”
          - 92 Points, James Suckling (3/26/2025)
For 9 out of the past 10 years, this has earned 92 points from Wine Spectator. That is simply unheard of, especially for a wine under 20 bucks! Aged for 10 months in seasoned French oak, the Mother's Milk is massively pleasure giving, yet never overpowering. Smoked brisket and ribs? Bring 'em on!
"Bold and embryonic, this needs at least ten years, if not more, to flower."
- Vinous, February 2023
Leading off with the 96-point review from James Suckling, it is interesting to analyze the details on the tasting notes for this wine. Wine Spectator, who despite giving it the highest score they've awarded to Dead Arm since 2002 is a full five points lower than Mr. Suckling, quoting a drinking window of 2024 to 2030. Making that particularly interesting is that the window given by Vinous does not begin until 2030, running all the way through 2042!
“Quite expressive and exotic, with red plums, blackberries and iodine, as well as dried herbs and nori, quite fragrant spices and currants. The palate has a sleek, dense and long feel, with impressive fruit intensity, delivered in such contained and impressively composed style. This has such length and intensity with a silky texture. Old vines underpin the style here. Drink over the next decade or more. Screw cap.”
          - 96 Points, James Suckling (11/27/2022)
“Dense, with toothsome tannins that add a firm background to tangy blackberry and blueberry flavors, with notes of crushed rock and fresh earth, spices, tobacco and toasted cedar. Firming finish, where strong laurel bay leaf and sage accents linger. Drink now through 2030. 2,100 cases imported.”
          - 91 Points, Wine Spectator (6/30/2023)
“This young, tightly coiled 2018 Shiraz is far from ready to drink. Right now, it is a heady mix of fruit, oak, lavish tar, licorice, and warm slate aromas wrapped up in a thick blanket of coconut oak. That impressive flavor intensity is well supported by weighty tannins through a seriously long finish. Bold and embryonic, this needs at least ten years, if not more, to flower. Drinking Window: 2030 - 2042.”
          - 93+ Points, Vinous - Angus Hughson (2/2023)
The punch line is that you'll want to give this a solid 60 minutes in the decanter while you prepare a juicy ribeye, NY strip, or rack of lamb on the grill. Better still, stash it away for another 5 to 10 years to let it develop!
